1076 -Did I make a mistake? It's not a 1006!

I found a 1076 with two mags and a box for $800 and it's in prime condition. However I really wanted the 1006, which I can't find. Tell me about scarcity, and why the 1006 is so much harder to find. Is the full hammer just the way to go? Seems like the bobbed hammer might slip when I'm cocking it for single action.

I think the majority of people who own 1006's hang on to them, so there aren't many that show up on the used market. I'm like you, I wanted a 1006, but when a 1076 came up for sale locally, I bought for the same reason.

As for scarcity... if your 1076 is the FBI version (no magazine disconnecter so it can be fired without the magazine) instead of the commercial version, then you have something that is really special and in my mind that trumps the 1006.

I had a 4516-1 that had a spur less hammer and swapped it out with a regular hammer, you might be able to do the same.

Shoot the snot out of it. A 1006 will come along for you when you least expect it. You might find someone with a 1006 willing to trade.

I have both and enjoy the 1006 for field work and the 1076 for carry, if you put a hammer on the 1076 it would prob be the best of both worlds.

I have a couple of 3rd gen smiths now and the hammer on the 1076 has a groove cut into the top of it which allows it to go into semi cocked position. It has been no problem for me to use my thumb and cock it. I do not have a 1006 but love the 1076 a lot. Great 10mm pistol.

If I had a 1006 I would trade in a heartbeat. I like the frame mounted decocker.

I've actually seen a 1006 or two, but never a 1076 in the wild.

Give some thought to changing the hammer. How often do you actually cock a hammer? Unless you want to emphasize to a badguy that you mean business there's really not a whole lot of call for it.

Did you make a mistake? If I saw a 1076 for $800 I'd be putting a deposit down & start looking for something to sell.

You can find them cheaper than that, I have 800 bucks into mine with nightsights, trigger and action jobs done by Novaks. there are some deals out there still.

How hard is it to get 10mm ammo. I've wanted a 1076 since before a ever bought a handgun. I went with the 4006 instead, for a bunch of reasons. I'm looking for a 1911 but the market is up on those. A 1076 would be a great alternative if I can find ammo.

not easy but I have a couple of shops that usually always have FMJs in stock and Academy sells the hollow points but 30 bucks for 20 shells can be steep a lot of the times.

Here in Kalifornistan we have factors that inflate the prices of used handguns like you wouldn't believe.

Last year I saw a stock (to my knowlege) 1006 for $795 & it sold very quickly.

Overpriced? Obviously not.

You would probably :facepalm: if you knew what I paid for some of my S&Ws.

I've just got the 1076 and I like it a lot too. I prefer the decocker. I too upgraded to some night sights (like on all my semi-autos). Just a sturdy beast of a gun.

You don't need to fiddle around with the hammer on the 1076, you squeeze the trigger and it goes bang, the hammer remains cocked till you fire again and again or you de-cock it!

It is interesting to see that the firefighters like these 10mm guns! I know I am quite fond of mine!

Hmm thought it was just me that liked the 10 mm, I have been a fireman for 20yrs. On that note I got the FBI 1076 from the FBI I think. My brother was the Firearms instructer for the FBI in the 90s at Quantico. He was a tester for the 1076 when it came out. He liked it alot but like the 45 even better. He was able to use a S&W 45 for some years until they made him only use issued guns.He was sent a letter stating he could buy his 1076 if he wanted it. He gave the letter to my dad and said he could have it. I gave my dad the money for the gun and have loved it ever since. Anyone know what they are worth? This is an FBI gun and was one of the test guns used before they where issued. Not for sale I just have never seen another one at gun shops or shows.

I have seen them go for any where from 1800-2300 dollars with letter and in Mint condition on gunbroker. The regular 1076s have been selling for 700-900 bucks. While mine is not an FBI delivered gun, it has been worked over my Novaks and is special to me. I really like the 1076 and would not mind picking up a 1026 to go along with it. The TEU serial prefixes have to be the rare of the rare.

In my judgement the 1006 is the best 10mm ever made bar none. Not saying the 1076 is not a good pistol but compared to a 1006 you can feel the difference just my .02

in any configuration of the 10XX series you can get the gun in numerous actions, safeties and sites. The gun can be tailored to whatever needs that you have. I like the factory decockers so that gives either a 1076 or 1026. The 1006 is a nice looking gun but it is just configured with ambi safety, 5 inch barrel and adjustable sites.

That is what makes these guns so cool still today. The M&Ps are not as good as the SW 3rd gens period.

I don't have a 10xx series S&W, but do have a first series 610 and a Glock 20C. If you want to shoot a 10mm a lot, plan on reloading. The nice thing is you tailor you load from mild to pretty stiff.
