1076 on the way.

I just won an auction for a S&W 1076. I've been wanting a 1026 or 1076 for quite a while. I've always appreciated the 3rd gen Smith and Wesson autos but have never been a fan of the style of slide mounted safety they use. I've also always been a big Sig Sauer P series fan but they have never offered a 10mm for sale.

When I discovered the existance of the 1026 and 1076 I just imagined the perfect combination of 10mm cartrige with Sig Sauer styled controls.

Traditional DA/SA, no safety to manipulate other then using the frame mounted decocker after chambering the first round.

Would those of you with 10mm S&W please give me some ideas for ammo you've had good luck with. I'd also like some suggestions on leather for this 4 1/4in 1076, I prefer leather and will need a range holster as well as maybe a concealed carry holster or 2.

So, now I also have to find spare magazines as well.

I'll post some pics as soon as I am able to pick the pistol up from my LGS.

Here's a pic of my 1076's. I shoot anything through mine. I have even used double tap ammo in bear country. I test fired a whole magazine and they cycled flawlessly. If you search the forum there is a couple extensiev 1076's threads that are chalk full of info. I believe one of them is in the notable thread index at the top of this section. Congrats on a great gun. I think every S&W collector should have at least one 3rd generation 10mm pistol.

What grips do you have on those guns? The gun on the left looks like it has S&W grips on them but they look to me like they have a different profile then the flat back strap grips on the gun I have on the way. Your gun on the right looks like it has after market grips of some sorts.

Also, where the heck did you find a high cap mag like you have in the picture and what are those worth?

Kramer makes excellent holsters that will work with the 1076. The hi-caps were made for the FBI contract and virtually impossible to find.

The grips are the same on both and are factory palm swell grips. There's three variations out there with the straight back, these palm swells, and another grip with a more gradual rear arch that is less abrupt then the palm swells.

The high cap mag was put up for sale awhile back on the forum and was able to make a deal with the seller. It was too much to pay (well worth it to me) for a single mag but it is the only one I have ever seen for sale and it was a must to have as the 1076 was the first S&W I purchased.

There for sale all over Gunbroker. Also can be found at many magazine stands at gun shows. Every once in awhile they come up for sale here in the forum as well. The gunshow method is where they seem to cost the most.

Most anything off the shelf will fire&feed fine through my 1006. 10mm is not the most easy to come by, but it is around. I have found remington, federal AE, winchester, PPU, and CCI Blazer all locally. None of those push over 1100fps though. The PPU is especially lightly loaded. I had one failure to feed with it.

If you want real 10mm loads you will likely need to order it online (swampfox, reeds, elite, doubletap, buffalo bore, GA Arms, etc...)

Check Midway USA, I bought some for $33.99 a piece last month. They show back ordered now, but that's what they were when I checked, so I signed up for an email notification when they were back in stock, which was in a couple of weeks.

Worth the wait instead of paying through the nose for one at an auction.

My old S&W #1076. Tried it, didn't like it. I could not hit with it and that obnoxious shaped decocker drove me crazy.

My S&W #1006. I like this gun.

I've heard that S&W still makes the 9-rd mags for the 3rd Gen 10mm autos. I have know idea what they charge for them

For full power ammo, you might go to Double Tap's web site. They have a variety of loadings using bullets from 155 gr to 220 gr. I use the 165 gr load, which sends it out at 1425 fps and about 740 ft-lbs. Most of their 10mm ammo has over 700 ft-lbs of m.e.

I recently sold a Sig P220 Carry DAK; during the advertising/negotiating process, a prospective buyer offered me a 1076 in trade; as I really needed the cash at that point, I reluctantly declined...if I had it to do over again, I'd trade for the 1076 in a heartbeat...I don't have a 10mm and still want one...bad!

A note on ammo selection. Sadly, Mike at Swampfox recently passed away, early November IIRC, I don't think Swampfox will be in business any longer, even though I've heard the website is still up, Mike was the business, chief cook and bottle washer, a great guy who will be missed.

Underwood Ammo a recent 10mm newcomer is picking up many of his past customers. Georgia Arms is another source.

For those who reload, the 10mm is a handloader's dream cartridge.
