1076 trigger/hammer malfunction

Not everyday I bump into another 1026 owner but when I do, it is usually on this forum...

Yep DesertFox,

You are correct, only here on this forum. And yes I have two 1076s and a 1026. I knew one of my 1076s suffered from this "half cock" syndrome but had to dig all of them out of the safe because they are safe queens. :D

Dry fired them all and my one 1076 and 1026 snapped to half cock. "The HORROR!!" :D

I was relieved when I put my 10mm snap-cap in and the "problem went away." :)

As DUSTYDOGDAN said, it is nice a 2009 post can help out in 2022 thirteen years later.

And some folks around here get a little miffed when you revive a "zombie thread."

I have a friend that has 2 1026s. My dad had 1 but his was stolen. The serial number was reported to the sheriff. I keep hoping it will show up one day.

I'm only missing 1086 and 1046 (yeah right, who isn't?) which I had chased for years and finally threw in the towel...

I'm torn on purchasing a new S&W 10mm. Such a fan of 10x6 series that I'm afraid of disappointment. Perhaps renew the quest for 1086 instead...

DesertFox,

They are out there. Seeking out a 1086 and 1046 is very ambitious indeed sir. On gun broker a decent 1076 goes for well over 2K. I could only imagine what a 1046 goes for as they only made 150. A couple of grail guns for sure. Bring your checkbook!

There are a number of folks who have these pistols around here.

I found a few pics from this website:

Good hunting!

Vegas odds are against obtaining a 1046 but a 1086 might be out there somewhere...

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I have a similar issue. My 1076 will occasionally have a dead trigger after using the decocking lever. It seems the trigger bar is getting caught on something and not moving up fully. If I press the trigger a little while decocking, the trigger doesn't go dead. Sometimes it works after I pull the trigger a couple times, as it finally snags the hammer. I've had this issue with both types of sideplates the one with the rubber spacer and the one without.

1992 model with THB prefix.

Smithing would probably be a better place for this.

Circlip isn't missing, decock pawl not damaged?
I understand why S&W tried this but their frame mounted decock design is a weak spot.

Hi,
that happens when the gun is not assembled properly. The "teeth" of the decocting lever assembly are not engaging properly with the decocker lever pawl. When assembling the gun, you need to make sure the decocting lever is all the way up, so all the teeth are engaging.

There is a new sideplate (with rubber spacer), is supposed to prevent the issue from re-happening, once is assembled properly. You need to have installed the side plate retainer ring, or the sideplate will move causing the teeth to disengage and malfunction will happen.

Is the retainer ring on the side plate installed?

The new sideplate and retainer ring are installed. The gun had the same issue before I put in the new side plate.

ok...

I would suggest to take it apart and re-assemble. Make sure the decocking lever is all the way up while installing. Also, make sure the decocker lever pawl is fully rotated counter clockwise. In other words, try to make the top of the teeth of the decocker lever match the top of the teeth of the decocking pawl. It is not easy. Take your time.

I had the same issue on a clients gun and it was driving me insane.

Yo might have to use a thin brass punch to make sure the decocker pawl is all the way up.

Hope this helps...

I've tried your advice to no avail, but I appreciate the info a lot. I think the FBI palm swell grip is causing the hammer strut to rub on the inside of the grip due to me seeing evidence of the rubbing inside. Also, if I installed the KSD grip pin retainer piece that holds the hammer spring to see how the gun functions without adding the grip, I notice the gun doesn't have any hiccups at all without the grips on.

Ok...I had a similar issue...let me explain

my client's M5926 had aftermarket grips. Those that do not have a logo (Robertson Trading something). The grips had 3 issues:

1) they were rough inside, like someone used a dremel to get clearance for the decocking lever

2) the grips did NOT put any pressure on the decocking spring, so the spring would come and then a malfunction would happen

3)the grips were creating to much pressure on the sideplate bar that protrudes on the right side and is kept in place by the retainer. So, the grip was creating almost as same pressure as the retainer spring, and sometimes it will pop out. Note: retainer spring was old, this gun was an Israeli surplus that was taken apart 1,000 times and the spring was NOT in top shape.

So, what I did:

1) I sanded and cleaned the grips inside as much as I could

2) I plastic welded a piece of plastic from an old grip, to make sure it will keep pressure on the decocker spring and clearance with the decocking lever.

(decoking spring Im talking about)

(sorry for the bad pic, it is the only one I took)

3) I did a cut on the grips, so they would not touch the retainer ring...

This solved the grip problems on this gun. Are your grips the original grips or aftermarket? Perhaps, try to check how they are "rubbing" the inside of the gun...

Hope this helps,

:)

So you guys probably hate me then?
I actually have 2 1046's. One is NIB mint, the other is service grade (no neither are for sale). My 1026 is a Virginia State Police and 1076 is FBI model, both with "Capable of being fired with magazine removed" markings.
But, I'm a true 10mm fanatic and have been since the beginning. I was still buying them even as it looked like the cartridges popularity was wavering. You may have seen this picture before if you have been a long time member over on 10mmtalk.

*It won't let me upload the picture*. Is there a post count requirement? When I attach an 800x600 .jpg picture 192kb, it just displays a bunch of hexadecimal information instead of the picture. Not sure why.

Sorry for the late reply. I am subscribed to this thread, but I don't recall ever getting a notification.

My grips are the S&W factory FBI Palm Swell grips. I'll try modifying the grip by the retaining pin. I think it is the hammer strut that is rubbing on the inside of the grip, but maybe it is something else.

Thank you.

**I can't get anything to work. I've probably been through this 20+ times now. I suppose I'll try my luck with S&W customer service and hope they still perform the recall work on this ancient piece.
