My 15-2 I recently purchased from a friend. It's a retired Suffolk County NY PD duty gun. "SCPD" is stamped on the gun. If anyone on the Forum here has any contacts with SCPD let me know. I would be interested in obtaining more information on the gun if the agency still has records dating back that far.

Thanks & Happy New Year..

15-2s were popular

Happy New Year! Sorry, can't help with Suffolk County...but 15-2s were obviously very popular with LEOs back in the day. Here's one from the other coast. This 15-2 snub (1962) was my wife's grandfather's duty revolver. He was Chief of Detectives in the 60s and 70s for Downey, CA. We're not sure how this one came about...the s/n says manufactured in 1962, but the 2" barrel wasn't introduced by S&W until 1964. Not sure if it was re-barreled, or if it just sat at S&W until it was ordered with a 2" bbl. in 1964. Enjoy!

Nice gun, and good condition for a LE piece.

I had an Atlanta PD gun and was told who to contact at HQ to gather info. Act quickly, as those old records have a way of evaporating. I sold it to an APD Bomb Squad member before I could research it. Guys like Mr. Vivas of NYPD are rare and old records are hard to come by.

The M15 was our issued weapon for uniformed officers too, but went away when we traded them for the stainless revolvers. Wish I’d had the money to buy it from the city but family & mortgage expenses got in my way.

Prior to the transition to GLOCK in the early 90s, SCPD issued a mix of blued Smith and Wesson and Colt revolvers, including the Model 15. When I went on in ‘82, I was issued the Model 64. Most of the revolvers will be stamped S.C.P.D. either on the back strap or on the left side of the frame below the cylinder window. Interestingly, my 64 was not stamped, but ones issued before and after my class were. And, stamping of the guns totally stopped once the GLOCKs were issued.
The issued revolvers and pistols are Suffolk PD property until retirement, at which time officers can retire with their issued handgun. I currently have an S.C.P.D. marked Colt Det Special, a 2” Model 10 and a 4” Model 15 and a GLOCK Model 45 in my accumulation.

I lived in Suffolk County up until a year ago. You can try calling SCPD Headquarters, Pistol Licensing Bureau in Yaphank, NY (631) 852-2233 & ask if they have any info on the revolver. I'm sure they COULD get it if they wanted - but that would mostly depend on which officer you get on the phone - most wouldn't be willing I'd bet. More than likely they won't have any interest in helping you - especially with the new SCOTUS ruling in NYS and being so busy even if they wanted to assist.

You can also try calling S&W and ask them if they have any info.
