$15 An Hour

If I wanted to draft a flight plan to dumb-down America, at the top of my list would be to de-incentivize Americans to better their education and other skills. And the best way to do that would be to mandate that the lowest jobs pay a livable wage. Minimum wage jobs have never paid a “livable” wage in this country. Never. And we’re better off for it. Some people just can’t see that.

So exactly how does a large corp paying low wages with employees being helped by the taxpayers get away with that? Seems sort of demented to me.

Corporations aren't "getting away" with doodilty. They are paying what the job is worth. The taxpayer has no obligation to "help"; that is the problem. The only thing "demented" about this is the over-reach of a government that has grown wa-a-a-a-a-a-ay too large.

I don't know where they came up with the $15 number, but I do believe, based on my personal experience, that they should index the minimum wage to inflation. Let me explain:

I was working for the min. as a kid. Then along came "circumstances" that caused inflation to zoom up (think 10%+). So there I was, making $2.30, (sidebar: which according to the BLS is $9.55 in today's dollars) and all of the sudden - BAM - all the prices shoot up. Suddenly I can't afford a 'tank of juice' for the 'ole Rocket 455 - if you know what I mean...so there I am, reduced to joining 'mad max' in the Australian Outback...

All because the min wage is not indexed to inflation. If it were indexed, and, $9.55 today, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation and I wouldn't have been forced to participate in that 'thunderrun' in that tanker with Mel Gibson!

What right does the government have to force any employer to pay any employee a given rate of pay? Where does it get that power?

This is why......

This is why you are supposed to get an education and a skill, even though that takes 'extra' work and trouble. It's almost impossible to raise a family on minimum wage jobs. A person that's very motivated and energetic and works at least two jobs may manage. We are raising a nation of fry cooks, dishwashers, and car wash workers because people don't see the value in education and skills when your goal is to get a job that requires neither.

I remember they had a strike at a local chicken joint because workers weren't paid enough, they wanted benefits and opportunities for promotion. It's like, what do you expect when your goals are set so low as to be underground. It sure ain't going to put you on the boat to success.

My wife taught special education. Some of her students are making more money that she ever did teaching because THEY DEVELOPED A MARKETABLE SKILL. Welders and underwater repair come to mind.

Kids, there's competition out there and you need to train and develop so you can play the game.

I think minimum wage should be $50/hr. That's about what I made in wages, benefits, car allowance, expenses and bonus in the pharma biz. I spent more money on stuff I didn't need for myself and anybody I cared about. Nice to write a personal check for a brandy new pickup. "It's for the economy and social justice" don'tcha know. Joe

And amazingly you go to some at about did din time and mothers are in the drive through line buying dinner for the family.... some more than once a week. Wonder if they will when prices go up to reflect the minimum wage?

There are a few reasons for that. One is when both parents work, neither wants to spend time cooking at the end of the day. I'm a master of the half hour dinner, meaning that I can whip something up that is tasty and nutritious in about half an hour. Not everyone can do that.

Another thing is that as soon as mom gets home, the kids have to leave for some adult run activty: soccer, scouts, chorus, whatever. Fast food is the saviour.

Perhaps during the next long recession we shouldn't tell all the recent law school graduates that are unable to find a job to "get a job at Mc......"

Oh Grey Bearded One.....I always wanted to be able to say something like that!! There were a couple things you stated in this post. First Neither WANTS to spend time cooking. WANTS is a key word. If they do not WANT to take care of a family why have it? Not dissing you. Just making a statement. When I was about 7 or so I had to help with dinner. What is wrong with that? Is it inconvenient for the children to help out around the house. It is, after all ,their after school activities so they should help out. I had the same things after school as did my kids. We sure didn't go to a fast food joint to get "dinner" Fast food is not a savior...it is an excuse. Also What happened to tasty and NUTRITIOUS?? Mickey D's Double cheeseburger fries and a coke is NOT nutritious and is not what I consider a MEAL. Yep it's food. But come on... My mother worked as well as my father did. we ate meals..together..may have been cooked quickly and eaten the same way but not almost edible not so fast food from a burger joint they call a RESTAURANT now. Again the statements you made are truly what people use for an excuse now.

Why would anyone think the government has any authority to tell an employer how much it should pay someone?

Why not? They are already trying to tell us what to eat, and what kinds of guns we should be allowed to own//in certain areas, that is// oh and, they FORCED some to have healthcare coverage..or else!!!

Sorry if any rules broken.

BTW, I AINT paying more for garbage burgers. They are priced too high for that roadkill as it is. Next burger I get, will be the real deal from, Walbangers.

I was wondering how that one day strike went.

I haven't been to a fast food place in months. Every time I think about going, I think, "Man, it's going to cost a lot! Why pay that much when I can make something better?"

If the $15/hr min wage goes through, I will not be going any more. Not because I don't want someone to make that much, but I just can't rationalize paying the prices it will require to support that wage for such a low value product. Maybe we should be investing in vending machines.

All they are trying to do, is buy more votes. I want a driving job, I EXPECT a starting wage of $35.00 an hour!!!!!!! Not a mere $9.50!!!!

For what the fast food places charge now, I can go to my favorite watering hole and have a good burger and wash it down with a beer for about 2 bucks more, the only thing I go McD for is their mocca frappe.

For me, its for these things I go to mcdonalds for.

My customary hugs from a good lady/friend who works there....Debbie.
Free WiFi.
Unsweet tea.

I bring my own food so as to eat healthy.

The fastest service at McDonald's I have ever received was in Yonkers,N.Y. and in exit 3 in Brattleboro,VT. both places were crowded and we were in and out.

The freshest donuts anytime is at the exit 3 Brattleboro,vt dunk in donuts.
No matter what time I stop in there they have fresh made donuts.

$15 an hour I don't care I want service and fresh food.

The reality is many Walmart employees are receiving assistance from the taxpayer. We are helping "pay" their employees whether we shop there or not.
