Saw a model 19-2 today at the gunshow and it had a six inch barrel and a round butt. Also had the yellow front sight.ser no k756287. Would this be a special order gun? Its my first k frame round butt i've seen in person. Not sure what to make of it. Any education would be appreciated

I'm sure no expert but a 6" with round butt sounds unusual to me. I don't know if they made a round butt -2 but someone here should know.

It sounds like someone put a long barrel on a RB snub frame.

Did you notice which style rear site it had?
Top one is the style usually found on square butts with 4" and longer barrels.
Bottom is the style usually found on K snubs to meet the shorter barrels site ramp.

It had a white outline adjustable rear sight. didn't think to look at grooves. sight looked well done in front. also had some muzzlewear

I see you where at the Valley Forge gun show ;)
I also looked at that gun (along with the $1,700.00 6.5" pre 27 that vendor had).

The bluing on the 19-2 barrel looked slightly different than the bluing on the frame, but the lighting was pretty bad at that vendors area.

Either way, that gun looked very awkward.
I don't remember what the rear sight looked like.

The 21/2 incher is the on M-19 made with the round butt...sent on back to S&W in the late '70s and had them put a 4inch bbl. on my round butt frame...wonderful pistol....

YMMV, etc...

I'm no Expert either but do know a bit about the yellow insert frt sights, as I have a pair of 29-2's with them. Yellow inserts were available from the Factory, and I have seen a few in the past 40 yrs. But they are surely rarer than red.

At least back in the 70's and 80's if Smith had the parts, they would retrofit about any bbl, cylinder etc between like frame szies...if it was possible.

I sent an early 2 1/2" M-66 RB in through Rays Sports Shop in NJ and in two weeks had back a 4" gun. I carried it off duty that winter, then sold it through Rays as a consignment gun...for a VERY healthy price.

The possibility of your gun being rebarreled by the Factory is probably quite high.

I believe the only other factory round butt 19 was the one with the 4" barrel originally for the Navy's O.N.I., these were later sent to the FBI. Also I heard that the State Dept.'s Office of Security (S.Y., later renamed DSS) also got their hands on some though can't confirm that for sure tonight.

Hey Rich, I bet when you posted this you didn't realize that you might get news of this exact same revolver a couple years later! My son purchased this gun recently at a show in Carlisle, PA. He was enthused about finding a model 19-2 with round butt and a 6" barrel.
Skeptical dad had to send to Roy for a letter the final paragraphs of which follow:

The letter raised some questions from us like no mention of the butt configuration and "target" stocks. The following pictures are provided for your examination:

The yellow sight insert could well be S&W. I found reference to an insert SW302 as I recall that is a yellow insert. What do we have here? I can't wait to find out . I have written a letter to Roy in reply to his lettering the gun. Thanks as always.

There it is ! I hope the round butt can be confirmed. It did not look tampered with, but never seeing one at that time i am no expert:D Looking at the cut off numbers on the bottom edge of the frame i am still unsure.A yellow insert 19-2 is pretty cool.

Given that the front sight has been changed from a patridge to a ramp, I would bet that the frame has been altered after it left the factory as well.

Round butt magnas fit perfectly, the rear frame serrations are perfect and the barrel pin shows no sign of punching (under magnification).

Having had a number of S&Ws round butted (by a very competent gun smith) I would have to agree with VM say that gun pictured in Ed45's post was round-butted after it left the factory.

They shoot just as good as if the factory did the work but they aren't original, but to the purist they are probably junkers. (smile)

Does the mainspring strain screw also look altered?
Looks like a square butt strain screw.

I'd like to see the top strap.

The location of the serial number is interesting.
It was centered on the RB frames but was more forward towards the front strap on square butt revolvers (at that time).
There are a lot of RB frames in the K75's with the SB frames ending in the K73's and not showing up again until the K77's.

Is the serial number also stamped in the yoke cut above the model marking? It usually wasn't on RB frames but was on SB frames.

Is it me or did that factory letter have a bunch of grammatical errors? I would expect better for $50
