I picked up a new 19-10 this week and noticed that the strain screw was backed out about 1.5 turns. If the strain screw was fully tightened the grip screw hit the main spring and wouldn't go through the grips. Guess that was S&W's way to get the grips to go on.
Has anyone else noticed this on the 19-9 or 19-10?

I've seen a similar instance with some Smiths of 30-40 years ago, specifically when Pach grips were installed. The grip screw would hit the mainspring, preventing mounting of the grip. To remedy this, some Pach grip screws would be relieved/thinned in the middle to allow proper full tension of the mainspring.

If they are the wood ones made by an outside vendor (Altamont?) I'd suspect the grip screw might be slightly off .
Id call S&W see what they say, my bet is they mail you out a set of replacement stocks.

I will have to check my 19-9 when I replace the stocks. I ordered some Altamont Coke Bottle Target stocks last week. The trigger on mine is great. I went to the range this weekend and I was shooting double action with my 19 from 7-10 yards away. I pulled one shot, but I was happy with the rest. The 617 in 22LR that I bought last summer is teaching me how to shoot double action. I won't win any contests, but this was good for me. I am improving.

The grip screw was more than slightly off on the wood ones. More like 3/16". I tried 2 different rubber S&W grips and they didn't clear the screw any better. I relieved one set of the "Goodyears" enough to allow clearance for the screw
