I have a pretty nice box for a 1905 4th change 4 inch blued in .38 sn-817434. One end is broken loose. Not sure how it would be repaired if at all. I have no idea what a market value is on this box. Any help will be appreciated.

Jim:

I think that is a very early post war box - the "S" serial number is a dead give away. Also, the pre war boxes were the hinged box (see below). As to value, I think it is probably worth in the $75 - $150 range (maybe a little more or less). When it comes to repairing it, let me know if you find a good way as I have several that are in the condition you present above.:(

It looks like the serial number is actually S817434. That would make it an early postwar .38 M&P that shipped c. March or April, 1946. I own a revolver just a few numbers earlier that shipped in March.

I don't know what the value would be; probably not much. I own a few boxes like it that are in excellent condition. That one needs some serious TLC.

Richard got in ahead of me, but we both came to the same conclusion.

Here are some pictures of boxes from the same period, in much better condition (one with the gun in it):

Hello Jim, your box has a nice bottom. A little attention, she will
come to life. Some wood blocks and a few C clamps and a touch of Elmers.
The end label looks like garage storage damage. Just needs a patient
hand and some time. Value, right now just a project. Mike
