2 piece barrels

...S&W are gatekeeping the tools and only give them out to people that are authorised by S&W, to my knowledge these tools are not sold or given to anyone in the US (perhaps they have changed the policy the last few years) and there are only a few service stations outside the US that have the tools...
I agree completely. Even though their manual that has the TN address (new) says they're available from Smith & Wesson, they would not sell me one, period. I also asked about service centers I could send it to and they stated there were none in the states that had the tool. I asked them if I could send it to them just to have the barrel removed and they also said NO to that. I think they need to correct their manual.

Know anyone there that could 'break' their tool and get another from S&W and sell me the 'broken' one? 😊

I was not a fan of the two piece, excuse me, 'hybrid' barrels but they are definitely growing on me. This could be fun.
They certainly cross threaded or something the barrel in the OP. Since then I have removed a much older 66-8 (detent on yoke, not in yoke cut) and a 19 barrel with no problems. They were very tight but removed them with no damage.

I can never remember. Is this a reverse pinto or since it's a Model 66 (silver), just a pinto?

What revision of the armourers manual you got? I don't have that page in the manuals I have.

I highly doubt that anyone that have the tools want to part with it. They are rare as chicken teeth and very expensive. I am missing only two barrel tools and I have been waiting for 3 years now, but I don't know when I will get them

Anyone who could run a lot of say 100 units in a good machine shop while making a small change to the tool to side step any legal patent issues would make a lot of money.
After the first lot was sold then you could decide on a second run.
After your tool became available, I'm pretty sure S&W would start selling their version, probably undercutting your price to keep the market to themselves.

Well it's been a week so I changed my mind.

I can imagine you'd lose a lot of velocity with only 2.75" of barrel so I decided to go with 4.25".
Besides, I already have a 2.5" M19 in 5.7x28mm.

Finished the 2.75" barrel already so I'll have lots of options. Hmm, what caliber to make for it next?

Well the 5.7 cylinder is complete except for threading the extractor (and bead blast).
Broke my #10-48LH tap on another project so while I wait for the new tap, built another cylinder blank.
But what do I chamber this convertible in? Looking into some GNR and wildcat cartridges but maybe a 5 shot .357Sig or a seven shot .327 Fed Mag?

Removed one (once) by putting square stock down the barrel, pouring it full of cerrosafe, and unscrewing with a wrench.
Heated everything first with a heat gun, enough to keep the cerrosafe flowing. Afterwards, removed the rod the same way.
Removal only. The owner said he had a project for the receiver, but I never saw it.
Maybe that would work again, maybe not. I only had the one experience.

Not even slightly a fan of the two piece barrels.
Maybe, if they actually improved accuracy; but those I have tested seem to be the opposite, if anything, compared to my older Smiths.
If Smith had made them more easily changeable, high end barrel companies could get involved, but looks like S&W doesn't want that.
Or, more likely, their lawyers don't.
