2 S&W .357 Magnum revolvers today at Cabelas

This is my first post here in quite a while. I used to spend a lot of time here while I was actively collecting S&W guns.

At Cabela's today there were quite a few interesting S&W revolvers, including a .44 Hand Ejector, a .455 HE Mk II among them.

What caught my eye today were 2 shiny 4" .357s...

686-6 SSR edition. I wasn't previously familiar with this model and line. I like the semi-full barrel lug (if that's a thing) and it feels really good in the hand. The stocks are a laminate that, as I said, feel good. It has the factor box with all of the original items, including a pair of rubber stocks. The fired case is dated 2008.

Nickel 19-5. Just a classic .357. Not P&R, but pre-lock.

Both are in great shape and I look forward to shooting them. I think both were good prices in today's market, but of course more that I would have liked to pay.

At Cabela's I would consider those to be great prices! I never see anything at our local Cabela's and anything interesting always seems to be $100 over the market. I think both of those were great buys! That nickel is beautiful!

My ssr became my favorite revolver to shoot.It seems to be easier for me to hold steady and balance over full lug guns.The quick change front sight is nice got a sdm gold dot and black square post.Also a dawson fiber optic since you just flip them in.I use the factory rubber grips but for target shooting didn't care much for the wood from the factory.Jennifer sent me some combats and target grips that look and feel good.Hope you enjoy yours.
 
Beautiful 357s . I am not a huge fan of the look of slab side / (half full lug) S&W put on a some of their offerings but its a great firearm and a great deal.Also we all like different looks! I might have bought it too at that price! The Nickel 19-5 is beautiful. That would have definetley come home with me. I would say you did very well. I think you stole that nickel 19-5.
 
Nice, nice score! I envy you. Re the 686SSR, you may want to check the strain screw as it may loosen when shooting. Others have insisted this can't happen, but it did on my SSR. My 'smith loc-tited it and the problem went away. IMHO, the SSR is the finest 686 produced. Good shooting!

Nice guns, nice buys. But ... when Cabelas is selling perfectly good SW revolvers at those prices, those of us sitting on a safe full of them should be worried.
 
I saw a 686 like that at a local pawn shop not long ago. Their asking price was $800 plus. I have no idea what they would have sold it for. I am sure much more than the Cabela price.
 
Did you buy them?

I don't care for 686s or slab sided barrels, but those prices seem pretty dang good.

I bought a 686 ssr on gunbroker earlier this year for what I thought was a great price given what others were selling for at the time. It was $648 including shipping. If I had seen yours at Cabelas at that price and managed not to faint I wouldn't have been able to get my wallet out fast enough to buy it. I once saw one at Bass Pro when the MSRP was $849 and they were asking $869. MSRP is now $1004.
 
Last yr I bought a 19-5 , 4" nickel for the same price . It looked almost like it had never been fired , or not much for sure . I got out my set of pin gauges and checked the barrel . The pin slid through effortlessly , great no tight spots in the barrel . Next I checked the cylinder throats for proper size . The .357 pin wouldn't fit , ok grabbed the .356 pin --still wouldn't fit . The .355 pin just barely would slide in . I bet the accuracy was " mediocre " shooting this gun . I opened up the cylinder throats and have a wonderfully accurate shooter that does not leave any lead in the barrel . Regards, Paul
 
Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. I snagged the 19 first and while they were writing it up, I said "screw it" and had them put the 686 on the order, too.

Too bad Washington screwed over all of us with CPLs last session so we can no longer take home handguns without a wait and background check. Cabelas won't release them until they get a positive "proceed" from the LE background check, even though State law does allow for them to deliver after a full 10 business days have passed without a "denied" response. It might be damn near Christmas before they get to come home.

I actually only have 3 .357s other than these...an Old Model Blackhawk, a Rossi lever gun and a S&W Model 28.

Well buddy, that nickel 19 just caused me to make a 140 mile round trip to my closest Cabela's in Hazelwood, MO. That was a complete waste of time. High new gun prices, higher used gun prices. Glad someone got lucky. I would have bought them too, in the same order too! 19 then 686, I would have bought a lottery ticket on way home too!

Not a fan of K frames with barrels longer than 3 inches or the new Smiths, but for those prices I'd probably would have snagged both.
 
I'm sure they would have allowed it, but I didn't ask. Probably should have, but they both seem so nice. Only fired by a little old grandma on Sundays.

I went to Cabela's strictly because of this thread and to my surprise... Everything was still expensive right where I left it. [emoji51]
They had two model 66's with 2.5" barrels for $600 a piece which normally id be excited about. However they were police surplus from Puerto Rico and were pretty beat. The one had a broken/chipped from sight. Both were covered in heavy scratches and deep dings in the metal, they were not cared for. Plus they had trigger locks on both so I couldnt check the timing of action. I passed. It was a sad day.
