22A ammo question

I had a 22A and it would eat any ammo I fed it, including the cheap Remington "Golden Bullet" bulk stuff from Walmart.

22A is fine!

Sorry guys, I was talking about getting CCImini mags, HV for my Sig Sauer Mosquito....a very picky little machine.....I am not concerned with my S&W 22A. I'm sure it will fire okay with just about any 22 lR rimfire. I plan to use the Standard Velocity 22 LR CCI mini mags. Then, I will try the Remington Goldens.
I have to "conserve" my other CCI minis for the sensitive mosquito.
Both guns shoot well with these, but I'm going to take some of your advice and use the SV in the 22A.
The only positive about the Mosquito is it's a smaller gun.....and I am a lady who has a small hand...the S&W is taking some getting used to, but it's a great gun.
Thanks for all the tips, you guys.

Clarification...

Just, for the record, CCI produces the "Mini-Mags" in two versions. The 40 grain (copper plated round nose) with a 1235 FPS velocity, and the 36 grain (copper plated hollow point) with a 1260 FPS velocity. THESE ARE THE ONLY TWO VARIETIES OF MINI-MAGS.

CCI also produces the "Standard Velocity" LR round, with a 40gr lead round nose bullet with a 1070 FPS velocity. There is no such thing as a "Standard Velocity Mini-Mag".

The S&W 22A is an alloy frame firearm, which I understand, has now been discontinued from the S&W lineup. Seems a shame since mine has been a great gun. Very deserving of it's reputation as the "poor man's Model 41". Virtually every "wear part" in the 22A is easily replaceable. The fiber buffer is something to watch carefully.

With all that said, it seems counter-productive to feed the 22A a steady diet of high velocity ammo (Mini-Mags) when the Standard Velocity (SV) rounds work perfectly well, and are actually a bit more accurate than the MM's.

Just my .02 worth.

On a semi-related topic, I was looking at a magazine loader for rimfire pistols and the list of magazines it functions with includes the S&W 22A but with the caveat "prior to 2011." What's the difference in those magazines and later ones?

CDNN has one for a couple bucks. My 22a is recent and it works super. The ad doesn't list which mags it fits, so for a couple bucks I'd get a couple and see. Hope I'm not going to get another slap on the wrist for posting a vendor..

I have owned a 22A and never shot the high powered ammo thru it due to the fact of what the slides were made of. Mine did not have any problems but some did with cracking of the slides on them. Thats why I don't recommend the high power ammo in that model. You just don't need it as well in that gun. SV is perfectly fine and you are not beating your gun up when you fire it is all. Use the high power stuff if you want to but if it cracks you know why.

I've read the posts of the 22A being discontinued, but as of today it is still showing as a current S&W model.

Well, I would suggest not employing S&W's website content as anything concrete as they seem to be either slow in updating it or uncaring about it altogether. I've ordered items from their Store several times and on two occasions I didn't receive shipping info or the good two weeks after ordering them so I called to find that the items were out of stock. When I told the person with whom I spoke that their website indicates otherwise, I was told that updating the website was not a priority.

Chalk that up to industry in America today. Too few employees wearing too many hats results in prioritization of tasks with some winding up on the "if I get around to it" list.

Personally, I hope the 22A is not discontinued as it is a very nice handgun, especially when its price is considered. I bought a Talo edition just because it was for sale by a dealer I know in North Carolina and it looks different. I'm now very glad I bought it. Those of us who own one can only hope that if they are dropped from S&W's lineup, they appreciate in value like many other Smith & Wesson handguns that are no longer made.

My gunclub just bought 2 of the 22A's for the students to go along with a 41, 3rugers and a Berreta Neo's.. They all get to pick every week which gun to shoot and the 22a's are proving to be a favorite pick every week it seems. I suspect they will hold their value for many years to come with the options on them.

We've all read the huge increase in gun sales in the past month...Wonder if we'll have an even worse shortage of rimfire ammo?

Take it back! Take it back NOW! Lord, don't wish shortages on us again just as things are beginning to ease a little.

I m a fan of the 422/622/2206 series of S&W .22 pistols and do not own a 22a/s. It is my understanding the 22a/s uses a buffer that needs to be replaced periodically. Hopefully one of the actual owners of the pistol here will address that design feature and advise if there's anything you need to watch for.

Have a blast with the new pistol!

Okay, I'm convinced.....I used standard velocity and worked just fine. I'll only use high velocity in my Mosquito.....

Yes the buffer piece does need to be replaced about every 8000 rounds or so I found with the 22A that I owned. Its a very simple task to replace it and they give you some spares when you buy the gun new. They are cheap to order and buy when you have to as well. I believe around $1.50 each for the last ones I bought. I sent them along with the gun when I sold it. I moved up to a M46 and a M41. No buffer tabs needed with these.

Well, so far, I've only shot 30 bullets out of the S&W. 20 of them standard velocity.
Only less than 200 rounds out of my sig mosquito.
All copper mini mags...high velocity.
I'll take guns into shop and have them professionally cleaned and serviced after about 300 rounds. I'm not that familiar with how to clean them myself.....yet. it's difficult to get instruction classes here in California. The State isn't exactly gun friendly.

I am going to try shooting Remington Golden Bullets next time I go to range with my 22A. Don't dare try them in the mosquito.

How about CCI greentag.....22lr for the S&W 22A?
