I have a 22a that i've put close too 3000 rounds through.
I like the gun and never had any trouble at all. until.

recently i tried some foreign ammo and had several FTE to occur
at the end of the day while cleaning it i noticed that the nylon? block in the slide has had it's face mashed quite abit, the top of it has little pieces hanging down into the face the shell head fits into. how should i correct this?

1. take a sharp blade and trim the pieces off
2. order a new one
3. i have the means to duplicate the block out of aluminum.
would this make the slide too heavy?

The part is a recoil buffer, it should be back againest the frame held by the recoil spring/guide rod. New guns sometimes have spares shipped in the box with them, if not call S&W and they will usually just send you a couple. They shouldn't get in front of the breachface even if they come apart, but it's a good idea to replace them as soon as they start to flatten out. Normal use would probably be 2-3000rds, more offen with Hi-Velocity ammo less offen with standard. It's purpose is to stop medal-to-medal contact between the slide and frame, if you find that they aren't lasting very long you should replace the recoil spring.

thanks . but i'm not talking about the buffer. the block i'm talking about is in the front of the slide that the ejector rod and firing pin rides through and is cut out on the face for the shell to sit in.. the plastic around the cutout has deformed and closed up some of it..

maybe i should try to take a pic or two

OK, that's the slide insert, part #31554. It's held in the slide with the firing pin retaining crosspin. The firing pins are stamped out of sheet medal and offen have sharp edges on one side. Call S&W and they should send you a new insert, and while you have the firing pin out stone or file it smooth on it's side before going back together.

I'd like to remove my slide insert too so I can do a detail cleaning. Can you provide more detail on how to get the slide insert out?
