Well, that's something new to me. Ought to hold well with all that weight out on the end.

I tried one on Model 25-2 years ago and it didn't seem to make much, if any, difference in muzzle rise. However, I was using a very light bullseye match load with 185 grain cast bullet. (I never saw a serious Bullseye competitor use one in a match). I had one on a Model 14 too. It seemed to be more effective. The last time I checked, Numrich Gun Parts still had the S&W muzzle brakes for the Model 14.

They are aluminum. They don't way much at all.
I have one just like yours. It was used when I purchased it 25 year ago. I used my Giles .45 Target Loads with. 3.8 Bullseye and a 200 Grain SWC lubed cast bullet.
The muzzle brake keeps the gun flat and even with little to no rise. If you doubt me, try it yourself with the exact same load, muzzle brake off and muzzle brake on.
It works well and functions exactly as intended.
WIth HOT loads, it may not be as accurate but would still, moderately, help keep the rise to a minimum.

I used one on my Model 14 for a bit. Didn't seem to make much difference, when I removed it there was a hint of rub marks on the barrel.

Exactly what dsf said. Tried it on my 14-2 and made no difference. Took the break off and it had left a bit of a rub mark.
???? Send a close up picture from the top of the front sight.
Does not thread on thus should be no thread marks. loosen screw or screws with a small wood wedge or carefully with a thinner screwdriver wrapped in leather very gently pry apart to loosen. Pull off muzzle brake straight off.
If you have thread marks on the barrel I'd like to see what they look like. Could not thread the barrel without removing sight and milling sight base off.
Something is not jiving here.
If it had been loose for a long time while being fired (years) or taken off and back on frequently there shouldn't be anything more than perhaps light eveidnce of a "rug" from the on / off. Even the slightest bit loose will make it rub through the blue more than if tight. Sal
