I have now read on multiple threads where forum members had their barrels changed to 4". Can anyone tell me who did the work?

I had S&W do the swap, the price was very reasonable I think. It was a hair under $300, not that long ago. I'm very happy with it.

First, Thank You for the response. I guess I didn't realize that owners were having Smith themselves doing the work.

I have seen a couple of them and like the idea of the extra inch of barrel. I have been looking for a new L-comp for a reasonable price and finally came acrossed one a couple of weeks ago.

Unfortunately, the barrel is just slightly canted and considering the fine firearms it will be joining in the safe, my OCD will not allow me to let it be.

Now, knowing that it is Smith doing the barrel work, I will have them replace it instead of straightening it.

Did you have a choice of front sights? How long did they have it? Is the warranty still in effect?

I did not realize that Smith & Wesson had any of the 4" barrels remaining

This barrel is from a run about a two decades ago

My L Comp was fitted with a 4" red ramp barrel. I added a Dawson F/O front sight. It's my best shooter. Pinnacle High Performance fitted the 9MM cylinder.

I'm a lousy photographer, the guns finish is the same matte blue, with the exception of the accessory 9MM cylinder that's stainless.

Nice looking firearm. I went with Ahrends rb combats in rosewood. I have had them for awhile on a 686PC, but, decided they look better on the 586. I am going to be calling S&W today. Maybe I can do some wheeling and dealing since it was going back to them for the cant anyway. I'll let you know how it turns out

Apparently the Head Gunsmith of the PC is on vacation until Monday so CS wouldn't give me an answer about the 4" barrel until then. As far as she can tell there are only standard barrels for the 586. Although the thought of a 4", matte black barrel with a gold dot front sight intrigues me and would make it a truly unique from the factory firearm, it would no longer be a Comp gun. It would be the only 7 shot, gold bead, 4" barrel 586 I have seen that has the warranty intact. I understand traditionalists disagreeing with this, but, I don't plan on selling or carrying it so the beating would be my own to deal with.

This brings up a S&W gunsmithing question. Even the PC would not make a one off barrel, correct? I.E. 4" comp barrel I asked them about today.

Well, it is on it's way back to have the canted barrel fixed. C/S said there is no barrel option and no sight options. If you guys had it done by Smith they aren't doing it anymore.

I have a 3" 19-7 K comp, IIRC the barrel in front of the port is not rifled, Just a smooth chamber.
I like 4" length revolvers alot but not sure the upgrade would be worth it anyway.

Since I don't plan on carrying it I figured I could gain back some velocity but Smith told me they don't do comp barrel replacements.

Well, sent the l-comp to Smith to have the barrel replaced or repaired. After having it for 9 weeks they called me to tell me there are no 4" comp barrels and that they would be repairing the can't and sending it back. I have it back now and the can't is indeed fixed. Unfortunately the finish is marred to bare metal on both sides of the barrel
I have bought my last Smith. I was getting ready to buy a PC 1911. Now it will be a Dan Wesson Valor.

Because the 3” barrels are sought after often, you might be better off selling it and just buying a 4” version (probably for less than you get for the 3”).

Canted or clocked barrels are all too common on Smith’s these days-don’t be surprised if the next one isn’t the same. :(

yeah, I'll second this. Not sure why anyone would want to add another inch as I find that 3 inch barrels are far and away the ultimate carry length for a mid frame revolver, giving up little in performance and shoot-ability over a 4 inch. Like chief38 said, sell it and buy a 4. 3's tend to go for a premium.

As to the quality issues - since I will not buy any S&W with the lock, I'll stick with the revolvers & quality of yore.

I know this is wishful thinking. Make em’ like the pre 2001 revolvers ( get rid of the……., and the magnum frame), Smith, and you would sell a ton of them.

I get the thought, but, premium? I spent $1600 on it. It is as yet unfired and has been back to the factory for barrel repair and now needs cerokoting. I will not come close to getting my money back. A shame too as it is a beautiful gun with Arhends combats on it.
