My friend just purchased a 3" model 60 round-butt. The gun has adjustable sights, flash-chromed hammer/trigger, and a full-underlug barrel. It came with two sets of factory silver medallion grips, both synthetic. One set is dark gray and the other is reddish. It is chambered for .38 spl. It has been fired, but hardly at all. It may have only been factory-fired. Other than the slight carbon ring, there isn't a mark on this gun anywhere. He didn't get the box, though.

How uncommon is this model? I've seen pictures of them, but never held one. He paid $250 (seller's asking price). I'm thinking he just about stole it!

Can anyone offer any information on how long these were produced? Are they particularly collectable?

Thanks

Sounds like a M60-4....
As for common, not very. Neat gun, is a popular model, fairly well sought after.

$250 is a bargain, by maybe 30-40%

I got one of these when they first hit the market. It is a great example of a very desirable trail gun. I have made many good scores with mine - quite surprising considering its short barrel and sighting radius.

These are FINE revolvers.

That price is a world beater!

I've always thought they were wonderful little guns! GREAT price!
They usually shoot as good as they look too.

I recently pick-up a 60-4 in LN condition for $400 and thought I got a great deal on it. Great woods loafing gun.

SmithNut,

That is exactly what he has. As far as the second set of grips go, was that something S&W included in the kit, or were they likely purchased afterwards.

Thanks everyone

meh92,
There are some models over the years have had two pair of grips included, however it's not a common thing.
I'd say, with regards to your friends M60-4, probably not from the factory. Most likely he got the grips aftermarket.

Note on my gun above, the front sight has been replaced with a patridge style, your friend's revolver would probably have the original ramp style unless it's been changed.....

I recently purchased a Model 60-4 used, one owner and shot very little. Sweet, sweet J Frame. Great carry gun. IWB around town and a DeSantis Speed Scabbard on the trail.

It came with uncle Mikes rubber grips, but not the Boot grips. Front sight is a black ramp pinned sight with no insert. The trigger and hammer are of the target variety which surprised me. The hammer and trigger are color casehardened.

Serial# isBSL93XX

I currently own 2 of these revolvers. One is a bright stainless finish, the other standard stainless finish. Both have red ramp front sights. Has been discussed before as to whether or not the sight is original. One I'm certain is original, as I am the original owner. Bought new. The other may have been changed, but it sure doesnt look it.
Outstanding guns.

Meh92, I purchased this little guy about one year ago. Paid $350 and haven't looked back since. The 60-4 is an absolutely delightful gun to shoot, and as much fun to fondle. Your friend did very well.

For a rare revolver, they show up quite a bit, I have one and love it. I recently saw two of them.

I agree, and think "rare" would not be the correct description. Last time I looked there were a couple on gunbroker. I have sold two within the last few years. A buddy has one available now, if anybody is interested they can email me and I'll forward your info along to him.

I had one of these. They are great. I stupidly traded it and am looking to get another one (after I get my 617).

These are even slicker with no worry of sight hang-up. Great carry gun.
And yeah, I had one of the others and stupidly sold it.

Did like the round butt though.

I dunno if there considered rare or not, but if someone has full underlug 3" M60's for sale, for $250.00, I'll take 2 off your hands immediately!
