I picked up this 3" Model 66-2 recently. Previous owner said he was positive the Hogue grips with S&W Logo were original to gun. The other 2 model 66-2 I own have standard magna grips although neither of those have "numbered to the gun" grips. Question is, did this special run of 3" guns ship with assorted grips or were they all gripped the same. If the same, what was the standard grip for the 3" model 66-2?

Hogue grips weren't introduced until the 66-4 series. Moveover, I believe by 1985 when the 3" 66-2s were produced, S&W was no longer numbering stocks to the handguns.

The NIB examples of these I have seen all had standard wood Magna stocks.

What model 66? Photos must have gone missing. :)

I agree with the previous posts. Magnas were the norm.
Those Hogues look to be newer round butt to sq. butt conversion grips

My 4" Model 66 was manufactured in '73 and came w/the small magnas.

Strangely enough, those Hogues do have the S&W that are seen on factory Hogues over aftermarket Hogues.

I wonder about the history of the 3" 66. I had one in 85 or 86, and the shopowner told me it was from a Treasury Department overrun. He said they asked for the 3" to get a longer ejector rod and more positive ejection of spent cases...... anyone ever hear this? And it did have Magnas, and so very rarely got fed any 357s
