30 SW limit… pinned and recessed. What do I really need?

Yeah it does.
AFAIK only 22 rimfires, 357 magnums, 22 Remington Jets, 41 magnums, and 44 magnums were ever recessed.
Plus maybe some that were chambered for 45 Colt?
The recessed requirement certainly limits the field.

The 41 mag rounds are real hard to find but maybe I'll get a 57 at some point.

You NEED something outside that criteria, like some 38 M&P's in 38 Special, 38 S&W, 32 S&W, etc. You get my point, I'm sure. You could narrow it down to a certain era, like post WW II through 1957. That might save some money. But then the post 1964 41 Magnums come to mind. And, well, never mind. I was just thinking about Kit Guns.:rolleyes:

When did the term "need" enter into the equation of purchasing a different S&W revolver?

Ahhhh, a man of my own mind.
I recently put money down on a 329NG Night Guard.
I need a 27-28 oz. 2.5" .44 Magnum like I need another hole in my, um, ah, head. Yeah that's it.
Don't need, but want.

45 Colt is pinned but not recessed as far as I know. IIRC the 22 rimfires and the magnum calibers are the only S&W products that are both pinned and recessed.

This will save a lot of $$

I would argue that the reverse is true. Check the prices of Model 15s relative to Model 19s for example. Furthermore, any representative collection of "pinned and recessed" revolvers would almost certainly need to have at least one Registered Magnum, which will be pricey.

Not that I'm saying your criteria are wrong in any way; far from it. In fact, I am of the opinion that a collection should have a theme of some sort, and some of the best collections have very narrow themes indeed.

My original comment had less to do with the "recessed" criteria than it did with the "30." But it was merely an observation; please don't take it as a criticism.

What is the "30"Ss&W Limit? I don't believe in any "limits" when looking for S&W"s. If you reached 30 and a really pristine early Registered Magnum presented itself you would pass on it?

Kind of figured that "need" wasn't the criterion, when I found myself buying duplicates of the same model. How many model 10 Snubbies, 36-1s, 60s and 3913s do I need?

That's what I recommend. Of my collection, that one in 4" ranks right up there with my favorites. I've found most gun shops carry .41 mag ammo but it's expensive. The correct grips are critical if you can find one with them. My scary motto: quality not quantity.

I finally found a 4" 57 P&R that I'm adding to the collection. They're not common. I run across the 6" and 8-3/8" ones a lot more, and while elegant I prefer 4-5" barrels in my N frames. I would have settled for a 657 4" but those too are rare. A 657 3" Lew Horton or a 4" Mountain Gun were even higher priority but are REALLY hard to come across.

.41 Mag ammo is easy to find around here, it's the prices and selection that stink.
