What can you tell me about the .356 Winchester?

A guy that I have traded guns with in the past showed up at my job today toting a model 94 Winchester chambered for .356 Winchester. I can get it for a decent price, but I am not too sure about it.

The gun looks like it has never been fired, but I think that might be because of the cost of ammo. Midway has some for about $2.50 per round plus shipping. WOW.

The gun also has the cross bolt safety. I don't like that either.

Well, Thats strike two. If any of you have any other reasons why I should or should not be interested I would appreciate the input.

Thanks

My father has a Marlin 336c chambered in .356 winchester. The greatest thing about the gun is that it will take a deer down after mowing through about 3 cord of timber!! Serious brush gun with the ballistic trajectory of a human cannonball. We had the thing zeroed at 100 yards, and POA at 50 was about 2 inches low. Terribly expensive to shoot, but will take down anything in North America without much problem. Kicks like a mule too, but overall i really like it, its a good all around gun for big game anywhere in the country(except wher 200+ yard shots are the norm)

The 35 calibers are great cartridges. Not sure why the poor description of the ballistics. The 356 is loosley based on the 308 case. It is no slouch. It's no 7Mag, either, but it's flatter shooting than the 35 Remington and hits harder.

356Win is the 307Win necked up to 35cal.

The 307Win is a 308Win w/a rim. Same body specs.

They could have just brought out a '358Winchester Rimmed',,and have been all set,,or just as doomed as far as the market was concerned.

It's as 35Rem says,,a 308 necked up to 35cal w/a rim on it,,and w/what ever proprietary dimesions Winchester ended up settling on in the end.

Certainly not a bad cartridge,,it just didn't find a sweet spot in the market.
Call it a 9x51R,,maybe it'd sell better.

Love my Marlin 356.....hunted for years with it here in SC. Does kick but great for woods hunting. I don't know how many Winchesters were made, but only about 2200 Marlins were made in this caliber. Ammo is still found at gun shows, especially in the 200 grain. I have a few boxes of 250 grain for serious work. Can't ever tell when a 2000 lb. Moose may walk through SC(lol). IMO a great deer and bear rifle.

If you are a handloader it is a good gun. 180 gr Speers with a book load of AA2015 went 2775 ascross my chrono. I bought a BLR in 358 and sold it without regrets, but when you hit something it goes down. Accuracy was around 1 1/2" @ 100 yards with jacket or lead bullet weights from 173 gr to 280 gr.
