.357 Model Question

Very nice gift! Looks like about a 3 1/2" barrel. Shows some wear but I'd be quite certain it's still worth a bit more than a grand. Some consider this the ideal barrel length for an N frame revolver.

Well this is all pretty exciting! It's a 3-1/2", I don't have any papers on it or anything besides what I showed in the picture. That gun was given to my wife's father by his maternal grandfather, they came from old money in New York somewhere. That's as much history as I have on it, but I will definitely be researching and learning more now that I am starting to learn what I have.

I'd get as much info as you can on the gun and the grandfather. I'd also spend the $50 for the letter to see just how, when and where it shipped.
The only thing my FIL gave me was a hard time....

Just for grins, I might take it into a gun shop just to see what they would offer for it. You'll hear every reason in the world why it's a piece of ****, how nobody wants those old guns anymore, and that he's being really generous to offer you $300.

I'm going to take the opposing position. The 3-1/2" was perhaps the least desirable barrel length at the time in 1935. As such there were fewer made in this length making them rare.

At the time, most everyone wanted longer barrels. Not so among current collectors. Wasn't Patton's a 3-1/2"? I'm not sure.
Yes, Old Blood & Guts had a 3 1/2" RM.

What you need to do is find a good pair of Faux ivory grips and get gold "GSP" initials on them, just like the originals, and a period grip adaptor. Then tell everyone you have Patton's .357. If I ever found one, that's what I would do.

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on such a wonderful gift. But be warned, you put that on Gun Broker, even for a high reserve and you just might be out a gun. Suffice to say it is worth at least several thousand dollars.
