.357 Silvertip

I don't think the 175 gr. Silvertip in 10mm is as powerful as it used to be, I've read that Winchester has slowed it up a bit in recent years. It'd be interesting to chrono an older one next to a new one out of the same pistol.

You're right. I don't care for them.

I also liked the W-W 145gr X357SHP. It was one of my favorite middle weight .357 Magnum duty loads.

As far as I've heard, the company still makes an occasional run of this load every year or two, but it's become expensive. The last box I saw on a discount sporting goods store shelf within the last year was $50 for the standard box of 50-rds.

Coincidentally enough, I was reorganizing some of my older duty & off-duty factory ammo from the late 80's/early 90's, carefully packed and put away as extra back then, and I came across a sealed plastic container that looks like it contains maybe 300-400 rounds of the 145gr STHP Magnum. :) Now I don't have to continue to "hoard" the remaining couple of 50-rd boxes I thought were the last of it in my ammo.

Now, if only Remington would reissue their excellent 140gr SJHP .357 Magnum load. ;) I only have a couple boxes of it left from years ago.

As much as I love the .357 Silvertip, I can understand why Winchester seems to have quit making the rounds. I just wish the 10mm Silvertip was still around. That is quite a good round!

To my knowledge, the .357 Silvertip was only made in the 145 grain load. I have not seen any other weights.

I have fired a lot of those rounds, out of various revolvers and two carbines. The load seems to work very well, and appears spectacularly explosive out of a 24 inch barrel rifle. The biggest thing that keeps me from regularly carrying it is the annoying blast. It seems, to me, far worse than Federal, Remington, or Speer 125 grain HPs (I currently carry Speed Gold Dots).

The concussion was so great that I actually thought my beloved 5 inch 27-2 had begun to spit from the barrel/cylinder gap, as I thought I was feeling something hit my face. Fortunately, that was not the case. But with any revolver I've shot these rounds from, I can feel the concussion on my cheeks and forehead.

It sure would be nice.

If they would at least offer the bullets as a hand loading component.

Only have 18 left and they are in my 2.5 inch and 4 inch 686's and my 4 inch 28. Loved the 145 grain silver tip.

I contacted Winchester and asked about the 175 gr. Silvertip, and was told they will be making it again next year. They are apparently tied up other production, so this is only a short hiatus for the ten. I forgot to ask about the .357 Mag load, but will do so and report back when I've gotten an answer.

Aaaaaand just got the answer.
Yes, they will be making .357 Mag Silvertip next year, they're just "focusing on more in demand calibers and bullet options at this time."

So, there ya' go.

Given how popular the new 'high tech' hollow points are, and how well they sell, it seems that Silvertips may be seen soon as less than relevant and may be permanently discontinued, it would not surprise me.

I think when it shows up again next year, I may stock up on a quite a bit of it. Hate to think it'll be unavailable one day...

I only wish Winchester would make the dang stuff.
An email to Winchester asking whether they would ever make 357 magnum Silvertip again got a noncommittal "maybe in 2016".
I haven't seen any in years.
Those 145gr .357 Magnum Silvertips are scary accurate in my S&W M640. I didn't have many left by the time I found out how accurate they were in that revolver. Last time I had to wait almost 2 years for Winchester to do a run so I was saving the last box I had. When they finally did a run I bought 3X boxes, I would have bought more but @ $50/box, well you know. Within months they all were gone again and I'm told Win only does a run every 2 years. Last time I contacted them they had no plans to stop the limited runs. I also bought several hundred bullets to load if need be.

When I started my first 'retirement job' at a LGS, was poking around a cluttered storage room and boxed up a bunch of old ammo I was hoping to buy from the boss. It included about 5-6 boxes of that Win. 145 gr. STHP.
Also, strangely, some Black Talon .357 180 gr. JHP.
He ended up telling me to just take it.
That was a nice goodwill gesture.

The box of Winchester that I bought had a 200 gr bullet.....
and it cost $45.

Where are you finding the little 145gr box of ammo?

.357 Magnum and .375 Winchester are slightly different cartridges. I cannot see myself willingly firing a handgun chambering the latter.

Maybe some slathering YouTube backyard 'gun expert' LAV disciple that 'tests' guns and ammo will try it now that it's been suggested. It would be entertaining to watch some such intellectual goliath pull the trigger on that experiment.

What the heck, they should go ahead and try it with the polymer "perfection" of a Glock 32 in .357 Sig...what could possibly go wrong? .357 Mag, .357 Sig, .375 Win....to quote the Hildebeast, "What difference does it make?"

At least they'd get more hits than FPS Russia's been getting lately...
