A detective here checked on some police shootings involving 145 grain ST's. He told me that the load is VERY effective on humans, almost too much so.
One of our FBI agents on this board said that one almost blew the arm off of a felon hit with the 145 grain ST bullet. It was issued in .357 by Dallas PD and the FBI. I think both were very happy with its performance.
I think it's ideal for men, and I'd trust it on deer or cougars. May do okay on bears, too, but I'd rather have Federal's 158 grain Hydra-Shok there, or Remington's rare (?) 165 grain designed for deer.
This is not to suggest hunting these animals with a .357, but if pressed into using it, I think the 145 grain Silvertip will suffice in most cases. It's probably a killer on peccary/javelina, too. And it'd likely disassemble an armadillo right convincingly. Add raccoons as another species it'd smash, and if a rabid one comes for you, that's good to know. I think they may attack even if not rabid, especially if you encounter several at once. I've seen some aggressive ones.
I have only a box or two of ST left, and wish I had more. It is one of the best items yet for .357 revolvers.
