First time posting and I was wondering if someone on the forum could help me identify a newly acquired Smith and Wesson 38 S&W top break 2nd model revolver. Serial number is 13xx on the butt and the cylinder. It looks a little different than either the "Baby Russian" or the later 2nd model in that it seems to be missing a screw or pin toward the butt end of the gun behind and below the hammer. Also there is either a screw missing or a hole was drilled on top of the frame.

Lockup is great, functions flawlessly, spins freely when 1/2 cocked just as I understand it's supposed to. I really like this gun and am excited to add it to my small but growing collection. If anyone familiar with this era could provide insight to the year and any specifics regarding this revolver I'd be thrilled to find out more!

Thanks,
Gary

Gary - Welcome to the Forum.

Unless you have a copy, this is a 1st Model or Baby Russian. The biggest difference between 1st and 2nd models is the length of the extractor housing under the barrel. Baby Russians have a longer housing.

That model was only made in 1876 and 1877, with around 25,000 total produced. With your early serial number, yours probably left the factory the first year of production.

Wow, that was quick, thanks glowe. It was sold to me as a 2nd model, but the extractor housing was the first thing that I saw that made me think Baby Russian. Any red flags to look for to see if it's a copy?

BTW - the screw missing from the top strap is a cylinder catch screw. This screw retains the cylinder catch, which keeps the cylinder from sliding on the base pin.

You might check David Chicoine's website for parts.

Thanks again for the info, I emailed Dave Chicoine to see if he has the part available.

I think it's an older replate. The edges of the sideplate look a little soft to me and I think the hammer and trigger should be case hardened as well as the barrel latch and not nickel. Looks like it was well done though and probably done a long long time ago.
