I finally got to take my new-to-me 3913 to the range today for a quick trip. I got the pistol from gunbroker, as I said in another post it was real dirty and needed some TLC before it was shot. Cleaned up nicely. Even though many of you have 3913's I figured Id do a little range report.

I shot federal TMJ 147 gr loads, a few 124 gr Hydrashocks, and a box of 147 gr Winchester SXT's. I had replaced the grips with hogues (but might go back, more later).

The 3913 worked without any problems, no surprise after the glowing reports of this pistol. Recoil was fine, a little snappy like most smaller sized pistols but more than controlable. Since I had not shot this model before I felt I hadnt gotten a good hold on it until the end of the session. Without much for the picky to be on I found myself gripping instead of holding. This pistol came with two mags, I replaced the bottom plate on one of them so both would have the pinky extension.

Back to the grips. This will be my primary CCW pistol in warmer weather. (I am in Maryland so it is about 95 degree right now.) The hogue grips do help fatten the grip ups some, but I almost think it makes it a bit to square feeling. (I feel the same way about my 4566 with the hogues, but not sure yet) I may have to put the factory grips back on and see what happens on the next trip. I also have a concern on the "sticky" nature of the grips under a shirt. Overall I was very pleased with the feel of the 3913, even though it is such a small weapon.

I was the most surprised with the wieght of the 3913. The frame is like air!! I was amazed when cleaning how much wieght was lost by the alum. frame. The nice thing is the weapons wieght doesnt change enough while firing to effect the feel of the last shots. I do think this will be a pleasant carry, I usually carry a 5906 in the cold. That and the 4566 seem like elephants on the hip after the 3913.

Accuracy was ok, but it think it was more me than the gun. I should say I am very hard on myself when it comes to accuracy. I shot today at about 7-10 yards, I think that is the "red zone" for self defense, not many places in my home further away than 10 yards. I shot some out to about 15 yards but the range is not marked for distance so this is a guess. I was able to keep all but two of the 50 rounds of Fed. TMJ in the X ring of a sillo. target. The hyrdashoks where just for fun, but the winchester SXT's seemed to be fine. I have attached a pic of the SXT's at about 7-10 yards, of hand.

Overall I am very happy with this purchase now that I have the weapon cleaned up and have taken it out. I do think it will take a few more trips to the range to reall get comfortable with th 3913, but it will be fun. Thanks for reading.

First off...Kudos on the nice shooting...

And I'm going through the same dilemma on my 3913...
Hogue vs. factory grips...
The factory grips are better for CCW....the Hogues feel better in the hand...

I know!!!...I need a second 3913...:D
A truly fine weapon...

Thanks for the range report and congratulations on acquiring your 3913. They are such a fine gun that I always feel I'm overstating the Model's attributes when I describe my experience with them. For a little variety, try a 3914 - which I actually prefer for carry because of it's dark color.

Regards,

Jerry

I went through a phase where I decided that the ultimate be-all and end-all role for the 9mm was in a "small/service" type automatic. I narrowed my choices down to three, and only worked with two of them. The two I actually bought and shot were the P7 and the P5 (or the HK PSP and the SIG "225"). The third? Yeah, buddy, it was the 3913. Now I've got a 6944 (DAO, blued) but I still get the itch, from time to time, for a 3913.

I have decided to stick with the factory grips for CC. I carry my 3913tsw daily using a Don Tauris IWB holster. One extra magazine next to my cell phone. During the summer, I wear cargo shorts and a tee shirt. The back side of the holster is up against my skin. I use a 5.11 tactical belt, btw. I like the factory plastic grips because of the carry issue and being up against my skin, plus, it gets a little sweaty too. Anyway, congrats on your new purchase.

The smoother factory grips work best for me in concealed carry because they do not irritate the skin as much as the rubber grips when carried with just one shirt over the pistol.

Some people are put off by the longer first shot on the 3rd gen Smiths, but that, plus the decocker lever makes for less risky gun handling for me.

3913 grips

Try a strip of skateboard tape on front and back strap.

Experiment with width of strip to suit you.

Solves grip problem on 410S for me.

Good Luck

I used to have a 3913. I kind of miss it sometimes, but I sold it to buy a 6906. I don't really notice any difference in carry. The only difference is the fatter grip, and that is outside of the pants anyway. And it saves me from carrying a second mag. I have enough junk in my pockets as it is. Throwing a mag in there just never felt right.

Congrats on the 3913 and even more so on obtaining a permit to carry in Maryland. I have a 3953 and prefer the Hogue grips for both feel and comfort. I have had better luck with the flat mag base for concealment, the pinkie extension just pokes against an outer garment too much.

Nice shooting! I carry a 3913 daily. I stuck with the factory grips and the flat magazine plate for better concealment. I love this gun.

Could a 3953 hammer be swapped out with a 3913 to allow thumb cocking?
