The SCSW mentions 472 guns built with a trigger guard area difference referred to as prototypes made in 1989 in the TDF serial number range. Has anyone seen one of these, or own one? I am curious as to the actual difference between the prototypes and the regular production models...

You may be referring to a 3914NL. Has the same profile as a 3913 Lady Smith.

The dust cover is sort of angled instead of being parallel to the barrel axis. That may make the trigger guard a little different

Google 3914NL and see if that is it.

No, these were made in 1989, pre NL or LS, they are referenced in the Standard catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd edition, it states they are "lacking a milling cut in the trigger guard area", there were 472 model 3914s made, as well as 451 model 3913s. I have never seen one of either model, and was certain someone on this forum has, or possibly owns one....they are specifically referred to as "1989 Prototypes"...
