1) Be the first to call 911
2) Be sure to state that you or your familys life was in danger
3) When the police arrive show them any evidence that support your claim i.e weapon, witness, ex.
4) Say that you are willing to answer any questions within 24 hrs. and after you have spoken to a lawyer.

How lagitimit are these? I have heard there are 5 but these are the ones I remember. Any thoughts on this?

An argument can be made for getting someone else to make the 911 call --- tell them what to tell the 911 operator ...

"Gentleman here says he was attacked and had to defend himself, attacker(s) shot, send an ambulance and police. Gentleman is Caucasian, 6 ft. tall, 180 pounds, gray hair, wearing longsleeve pale blue shirt and blue jeans... etc., etc." Then instruct them to hang up.

If you make the call, you may inadvertently incriminate yourself (the call will be recorded, and will be admissible evidence in any attempt to prosecute you) by blurting out seemingly innocuous information in your emotionally charged state. If you get someone else to make the call anything they might say will just be hearsay, if they weren't a witness...

Addendum to #3. Secure the scene, including any weapons the attacker had. This doesn't mean picking them up, but securing them in a way that they can't disappear before the cops arrive, is very important. He may have had friends who could pick them up and hide them.
