.40 S&W ammo availability

During the panic last fall, I gave serious thought to picking up a pistol chambered in .40S&W. 9mm had completely disappeared in my AO, and 45acp was in short supply.

However, you couldn't swing a cat without hitting some .40S&W ammo. Nearly every gun store had it, and my usual haunt had a whole pallet of the stuff. In nearly every case, the price hadn't been hiked at all over pre election prices.

The thought to buy a .40 pistol has crept into my thoughts again, but now ammo for it has almost completely disappeared, while 9 & 45 is out there.

Did everyone else do what I thought about doing and buy it up?

.40 is readily available here in MN. I was at 5 stores yesterday that sell ammo and all had .40, most several kinds. One had at least 8 kinds including UMC 1000 pks. I was thinking of buying a .40 partly because I couldn't find 9mm. Now loaded up on 9mm again, but it's still much scarcer than .40. Can't imagine it will take too long to make it over your way.

I have a 40c, usually use speer lawman which was scarce for a while, but seems to be coming back.

here in NW Pennsylvania, there is .40 readily available. The Walmarts have as much .40 on the shelf as all the other handgun calibers combined. 45acp is probably second most prevalent. There is usually 9mm available, but selection is more limited.

Very available in Southwestern,Pa. also.

Walmart almost always has some on the shelf.

Though I didn't see much of it at the Pa.Gun Collectors show today. (Case lots that is.)

My LGS has cases of .40, but no 9mm ball. 9mm is still very hard to come by out here.

I went to a local gun show yesterday primarily to look for 22 LR. Found a good selection of and purchased the following: 22 LR , 32 S&W Long , 38 SPL , 357 Mag and 40 S&W. I went early in the morning and later in the day had second thoughts about going back and purchasing more 22 . I ended up going back and most of the 22 was gone but found two vendors that still had and I purchased more. But there was plenty of 40, this is in Georgia.

The same holds true here in the Northeast of Pennsylvania so I guess thing are "improving" all over PA right now. Now if I could say the same about 22LR ammo I would be a lot happier. It's been months since I've seen any at all!

Durring last years panic (here in CA) 40, 9, and 45 were all very hard to find. Now, the only one of these that is scarce is 9.

Probably will go ahead and look for a nice used .40 pistol. It won't hurt to have options for the next panic which IMO is inevitable.

Midway has (as of two minutes ago) 155g. .40S&W in the new Remington HTP very reasonably priced, IMHO. Boxes of 50 under $40.

Wal-Mart had steel case Tula .40 about a month ago for about $15/50 rounds. Functioned and shot OK but was dirty and stunk to high heaven while firing. WW white box took its place at WM for $38/100. Plenty of it here in the Richmond area.

Pretty easy find by me at WM. Or most LGS. I just walk by the case if I'm there and if I have the spare cash I get a box.

Lucky today, went by and he had my WWB value pack in .40 Got 1, and he had Remington Value UMC (1 Box, not 1 case) .38sp.+P so I bought that. (I don't even have the 638 I ordered yet, but I have 1 box of ammo for it). I think 100 rounds is enough for a 5 shot wheel gun. He said you can buy another box, I'm like no thanks, let the next guy have some.

I picked up a box of that for $37 at Academy today. Last week I picked up a box of HTP 180s. I still have 2 boxes of 20rnd Hornady 165 FTXs as well. Plus 13 FTXs in my Sig.

I'm building a small stash to sit on.

I have some 9mm too but 200 rnds of FMJs, a couple boxes of Hornady 115 FTXs and some loose JHP rounds.

It's been easy to find in NW PA as stated earlier...Venango County to be exact.
i've been able to slowly build up a stash of over 1000 rounds of .40 over the last year. i might have had 300rds on hand before sandy hook. i have 2 smiths that shoot it. with it in somewhat limited supply, i've only shot about that much too...the lgs that has had it consistently has a limit of one box per caliber, per vehicle, per day. if i knew i was going to shoot over the upcoming weekend, i'd buy twice what i planned on shooting.

I did manage to pick up a few winchester 100 rounders for $36 each last summer at walmart

I saw the handwriting on the wall, and bought a case of SD ammo before the last election. I also reload, so I have more than I can shoot right now. i haven't noticed much for sale locally (Denver area).

Same here. When I look into Walmart ammo cases for 22, I always see 40.
Sometimes 45, sometimes off brand 9, but always 40.
