.40 S&W primers with firing pin swipes I didn't expect. What's wrong? (PIC)

The sharp edge of that missing chunk from your firing pin could very well cause pierced primers. I think you're in the market for a new firing pin.

Yes, you DO have a problem. The tip of your firing pin is in even worse condition than mine was when I had that problem. I was able to polish mine smooth and it was still serviceable. I think you'll need a new one. I also suggest you check the firing pin hole in the slide. You may find some erosion there too, but from the looks of your primers you shouldn't find much if any. It doesn't take much to damage the tip of the firing pin like that, especially with such a high pressure cartridge. Put in a new firing pin, firing pin spring and recoil spring and you should be OK. I have learned to use stock springs to keep everything balanced.

re: "drag marks left when slide/barrel comes out of battery and the firing pin is still protruding from the breechface. Completely normal"

I for one reject the notion that otherwise well designed, engineered and manufactured firearms would leave such marginal performance on essential function, as being 'normal'.

Kudos to OP and Mr. Sinko for identifying what is a probable cause in many of the 'normal' observations.

I shall check mine at once.

Thanks all for a very helpful thread.
