I started this pole so hopefully we can get a ratio of .40 Shields that are not blowing up to ones that are. Please vote if you own and have shot your .40 S&W M&P Shield.

In the real world out there, the ratio of happy owners versus owners with problems would likely be in the ten to hundred thousands to one range.

Here on the S&W forum, as is probably true on most other maker's forums, the ratio will be much much lower. The vast majority of happy owners out there do not participate in forums such as this one. However a good percent, possibly even a majority of owners who show up here, are looking for answers for problems or telling their stories about their problems.

Anyway, I'm a happy camper. No kaboom.

I don't own the .40 shield but a friend of mine loves his. A ftf is all I've heard him say, def no kaboom

The Kaboom issue is much like the mag drop and trigger safety issue. There are far more with no issues as compared to ones with issues. You will hear a complaint over an issue before u will hear anyone complain over no issues. Its just the way things work around here.

Which is why some of us like to turn the tables from time to time and poke a little fun.

Like yours, mine goes kaboom every time I pull the trigger until the mag is empty.

Mine is great. I did have a mag drop issue. I sent it back, they replaced a piece, and gave me an extra mag! Since then i have put about 1000 rounds (at least) without a single problem.

Every time i go to the range i shoot it in the exact condition ive been carryin... Meaning i draw and shoot as it was, without emptying mags. It helps my comfort level.

Anyway... Lots of rounds through it and going strong

I appreciate your interest in number crunching.

Right now there are just over 500 people on the M&P link.

Don't want to pop the Engineers bubble but 500 folks minus out everyone who does not own a 40 Shield from the 500 and you don't have a large enough sample to make it statistically significant.

I have had a total of 4 different shields. 2 x .40 and 2 x 9mm. Only one of the 4 has kaboom. How do I vote? :D

Vote for the KaBoom Wally. That's what we're really looking for in this poll.
Thanks for voting,
Rob

Maybe 1000 fired here with no issue. No issues at all. Thinking I will not participate in hanging chad today. :p:)

If you have ever had any gun self destruct in your hand directly in front of your face or even in the guys hand beside you, you would understand that, that one incident TRUMPS all the other "mine works fine" comments period. Which makes this poll pretty redundant.

So, what does that mean exactly? That we should expect our Shield to blow up each and every time we fire it? If so, I'll lay my firearms down and never pick them up again because they MAY blow up in my face and kill me and the people around me.
All I'm trying to do here is get a ratio of how many Shields blow up vs. how many don't. The poll is only as good as the people who choose to vote in it.
So as it stands now, we have a 6.5% chance it will blow up and a 93.5 percent chance it won't.
In my opinion, if more people would honestly vote in my poll, the ratio would be closer to 99% have not blown up. But I guess we will never know.

First time posting. I have a 40 shield, fired around 400 rounds of various ammo with not one single issue. Out of all the pistols I've owned this one is by far my favorite and the one I carry every day. My first round fired date from s&w is 10/2013. Thanks for this thread and hope this helps.

SpringGunTunes what it means is that if your shield has a sloppy chamber and is bulging brass badly as shown in many posts on here YES you should expect it to explode each and every time you shoot it because you are 1 weak case or thinner than normal case head away from just that. What happens to the numbers when those are added in the kaboom column.
People have been blowing up autos with unsupported chambers and high pressure handgun rounds long enough that you would think that the makers of the pistols would stop with or minimize the amount that the chamber is unsupported for any ammo that specs above say 25k psi.
Do as you wish and good luck with your poll. Put me in the column of WILL NEVER own a Shield. Or a Glock for that matter. Humm I guess that would be the No Kaboom column

Lets assume that what you believe to be true is and 99% don't blow up. Say 10,000 are made that means that using your numbers there are 100 out there that will blow up. DO YOU OWN one of those? Is it worth it to find out?

Doesn't matter what kind of firearm you shoot. You run some risk of it blowing up every time you pull the trigger. People have been blowing up handguns of all kinds long enough that you would think that the makers of the pistols would stop making them altogether. Play with your statistics to fit your end if it makes you feel better.

That makes too much sense for most people. They'd rather think of some other crazy reason not to won a Shield. But that we should own some other weapon that isnt going to blow up.

Was at a local small tactical/gun store today and while I was waiting for my BGC to clear a customer came in with a Shield 40 in a ziplock bag ...in pieces. Kaboom. First time I have seen a blown up gun of any kind in person.

Well, I see seven votes for KaBooms although I think only about four were reported here.
Anyway, the point has been made. Your risk of a KaBoom shooting good factory ammo in your .40 shield is about the same a falling into a volcano.
Shoot your .40 Shield with confidence.
Thanks to all who voted.

I was in that same small, tactical/gun store today at the very same time, and saw that same customer with the ziplock bag. He had a ham sandwich in it. First time I have seen a ham sandwich of any kind in person.

My point: Here we are on an anonymous internet message board, where anybody can post anything they want, and of course it has to be taken as gospel. And based on unverified comments, others make decisions such as "I will never own a Shield for as long as I live, because "Big Guns Daddy O" posted that his Shield exploded into a million pieces with a group of kindergarten children standing right next to him". How many .40 Shields are out there? And other than this board, where is the outcry regarding exploding Shields? But, it does give posters something to rant about, doesn't it.

I'm only telling you what I saw. Take it for what you want. I saw a Shield 40 in pieces end of story. The numbers would appear to show a higher then "normal" explosions with this pistol. Not spreading internet rumor, just pointing out the fact that I saw one exploded. In my 40 years of shooting this is only the second pistol I have seen do this in person.

So which is it, first time you've seen a blown up gun in person or second?
You've said both now..

Any other details about the blown gun? Ammo type used, etc?
