Looking for info on parts for 4013/4014/4053 non-TSW single stack pistols.

Magazine Springs, Recoil Springs, Magazine followers, Grips, etc. Interchangeability to other SW 3rd Generation pistols??

Found one reference that says 3913 Magazine Springs are same as 4013 but also lists the 3906 which has longer magazine and I doubt 3906 and 3913 would share Magazine Springs.

Found some listings for 4013 parts, but they are clearly 4013TSW double stack, not 4013 single stack.

Found Numrich listing of some 4013 parts, but nothing currently available.

Thanks for response - so I take it originally the 4013 used a single recoil spring, then they changed to a double recoil spring setup like the 4013TSW
Factory Grips (4054) show available, but alas, Magazine Spring shows Discontinued Not Available.

Just to confirm, S&W went from single spring in 4013/4014 (single stack frame) to double spring using springs from the 4013TSW/4053TSW/4056TSW (Double stack medium frame)

Not quit.

First off, they are different sized frames (large -vs- medium) & the 4013TSW didn't come out until 2 years after the last 4013 was made.

However, the 4013 rev.1 did come with a 16# single recoil spring but later the 4013 v.4 came with the dual/nested recoil springs used in the later 4013TSW, & others.

My two 4013's are both rev.4

How does one tell which version? Is it by serial number?
Versions 1-3 had single recoil springs?

OK - but all the 4013's seem to have common parts except for the recoil springs and guide rods - and the early springs show discontinued while the 2 spring setup is still available.
I understand the TSWs were made using a different frame (basically a 69xx size double stack frame) while the non-TSWs used a single stack frame - but were the frames the same length?

Is it possible that SW intended that those replacing springs in early 4013s should switch to the 2 spring setup shown for later 4013 (nonTSW) which are same spring p/n as 4013TSW.
Question may be moot as the 4013 I am inquiring about was made in 1999 according to SW and no doubt is R4. Will have to disassemble and see when I get my hands on pistol.

I've never seen a 4013 R1 but I'm sure they had different SN# sequences than later models. No idea when they changed in relation to SN#s & revisions though.

According to the S&W Parts List Catalog (2012), R2 is not referenced.

R3 had a different barrel (with the wider hood) & ambi M/S lever plunger

R4 had a different slide, recoil guide rod (.237" dia.), & the dual/nested recoil springs.

The SCS&W catalogs have little to nothing on the 4013's history.

Here's the odd part about these Revision numbers.

I have the factory box for one of my 4013s, mfd May-1995. It went back to S&W for a refresh/refurb (maybe because it was a loaner, training aid, or a sales reps demo gun ?) and was re-sold as a Used pistol.

(( Here's my thread on it: S&W 4013 - "U" is for Used Gun ))

They stamped a "U" on the trigger guard & placed an "Used Gun" label over the original label.

Those labels (both) have "03" on them. Other people have also confirmed that their 4013 R4s have that designation on the label too.

Going with the logic that a R1 was a "00" then a R4 would be a "03", otherwise it's I don't know. :p

No, slightly different dimensions all around. Not like Mut & Jeff different though.

The 4013TSW frame is actually wider, of course, because it's a double stack, but the 4013 is taller because it's a single stack large frame.

The slide & barrel of the 4013 are noticeably beefier than the 4013TSW's though.

Only guessing, but I suspect anyone with a R1 (.290" guide rod) that complained or wanted to "upgrade" to the dual/nested recoil spring on the .237" guide rod would have had to add the same pilot bushing to the slide that the early 4516's needed to use to reduce the slide's guide rod hole down to the smaller diameter size to make the conversion possible.

.

By the way, the dual/nested recoil springs, installed in the pistol & at full compression (slide fully rearward) measured 20# to 21#s on my test setup in various models that use them.

Quit an increase over the single recoil springs 16# rating.

Mine has the 2 spring setup and small guide rod.
Where can one purchase the two spring setup?
I can find the outer spring but not the inner spring.

My understanding is the ALL 4013TSW, 4053TSW, and 4056TSW as well as the LATE 4013, 4014, 4053, 4054 shared the same Inner / Outer Spring combination while the EARLY 4013, 4014, 4053, 4054 used a different single spring setup. Not sure if the 2 spring setup would work in early non-TSW guns.

They are hard to locate on various sites - some show under 4056 without TSW (a gun that never existed), others show under 4013TSW - so you may have to search all of above on a given site. But here is what I have found - no guarantee as to accuracy:

I have purchased both from Brownells but a second Inner Spring is Back Ordered.

Thank you BLUEDOT37 for a very thorough explanation. I had not realized the non-TSW 4013s ever had the narrow hooded barrel / slide combination.

And it now makes sense that the non-TSW guns with the dual recoil spring setup would require a different slide or a bushing due to the smaller diameter guide rod which I had also missed.

And the U makes sense. Have you ever seen a T stamped like the U near trigger guard?

I have a 4013 with single spring and a 4053 with double spring (both single stacks). The barrels are not interchangeable (hoods are different width). I don't think you can find a factory single spring, but Wolf Gun springs still makes them. I think I got the last one from Midway.

As for the double spring setup, I think I found one at Midway and the other at Brownells, neither had both in stock at the same time.

I also have a 4013 TSW and it uses the same nested springs as the 4013 and 4053 with nested springs.

The nested spring has a smaller guide rod. To convert to nested, you need a bushing made for it. The resident gunsmith on this forum BMCM will do the conversion.

I know I answered some questions not asked, but figured my experience might help someone else that has those questions.

One thing that I noticed. Either S&W had some early frames crack or thought the higher recoil of the 40 would break them. My 4013 TSW is super thick in the dust cover and frame rail area and so is my 4006, much more so than the 9mm equivalent frames.
