.41/.44 primer help

I use WW large pistol primers with Unique. There is no need for magnum primers with that powder. I suppose I have used most common brands of primers, but my LGS carries mostly WW, so that is what I use.

If all you use is Unique then as mention just regular large pistol.

If you load full house magnums for the 41 or 44 Mag with H110 or W 296 then yes, you need a Mag primer. Easiest though is just use 2400 powder for the big boomers, then you can stay with the regular primer.:)

Forgot to add that Winchester Large Pistols are good for regular and Magnum

Got a thousand primers and 3# of Unique and 2# of 4227 so I oughta be good for a while. (BTW.41 mag is $40 a box of 20 at Academy and .44mag is $30.)

41, 44 Mag and 45 Colt are calibers that really really pay to reload!:D Plus 45 Colt is usually only sold in Cowboy loads and it can be so much, much more. Not that you need to make it a Magnum but it can go from mild to really wild with that big lead bullet,:)

Congrats on getting into reloading. Warning: It is addictive. I must say, I enjoy reloading as a stand-alone hobby. Your re-loads will get better and better over time. Document everything, so you can easily duplicate your best work. You'll know you're 'there' when your buddies want to trade a box of their factory ammo for a box of your reloads! That day will come.
The other fun thing is that, as you are noting, the less popular calibers, such as the .44 special and .41 magnum are available to you with no heavy price burden. Welcome to the club.

I use the Winchester Large Pistol Primers because that are marked "for standard or magnum loads". Not sure what that means, exactly, but it's one less thing to fret over.

I have been using CCI magnum large pistol primers for my .44 Magnum loads since about December, when I couldn't find any regular large pistol primers. I use either 8.8, 8.0, or 7.5 grains Unique, and they all work fine with 240 gr LSWC. The 7.5 is a shoot-all-day load, and the 8.8 is a better-hang-on-to-it load, in my 3" 629. Hope this helps!

My feelings exactly. I use them for full power, H110 44 Mag loads and wimpy, Power Pistol 44 Special loads --- and everything in between.

Yep, all those cartridges use Large Pistol primers and can also use Large Pistol Magnum primers. With most powders Magnum primers are not needed. W296/H110 is an example of a slow burning, "difficult" to ignite powder where Magnum primers are recommended. If substituting Magnum primers for Standard primers return to the starting loads in your manual anfd work up. Sometimes even the small change from Standard to Magnum primers can cause large differences in pressure and acuracy...
