One of my few unfired safe kings, the Punxsutawney Phil Model 629 from the Smith & Wesson Custom Shop made for Groundhog Day in 1997. It has "Punxsutawney Groundhog Club" written in script on the barrel, so they had to use the 8 3/8" barrel. It came in a beautiful wooden box and has "Feb. 2nd 1997" engraved on the undelug and Punxsutawney Phil engraved on the sideplate.

I think the Punxsutawney commemorative is the coolest commemorative I've ever seen.
Five days ago I didn't own anything that I could have added to this thread. I have never even thought about owning a .44 mag. But, this followed me home from a shooting range session with a couple of guys from work. I'll chalk it up to peer pressure. Not to mention, in the crazy gun price climate we are in, the gun shop was almost giving it away. I might be over estimating, but I don't think two cylinders were put through it.

The presentation case will hopefully getting some love from a fellow member. Get some S&W blue back in the lining.

Range report

Took my 6-1/2" Model 29-2 to the range yesterday with some Winchester 240g JSP. It's still wearing its GC target stocks, and I forgot how much that mule kicked! After a couple of rounds I started to get used to it again, but I'm thinking that at my age I might have to dial it back a bit. I must be spending too much time shooting 9mm and 10mm pistols! A couple of friends tried the Model 29-2 out, too...one or two rounds was enough for them! That old revolver is beautifully made and extremely accurate, but I may need to put some different stocks on my .44 Magnums for shooting!

Since I really enjoy shooting my 3" 624 in 44 special, so I couldn't resist this Lew Horton 629-1 recently for sale here on the forum. Not in my possession yet, but I can't wait to try it out. Guessing the magumun loads are going to be a little more challenging than the 44 specials which shoot like butter out of these heavy N-frames.

I can't compete with the likes of 75Vette - I only have 10 (9 Smiths, 1 Ruger, 11 if you let me count my Marlin lever gun), but my favorite is my Elmer Keith Commemorative, Deluxe Edition (1 of the first 100)...

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Only have one these days; a 6291 (no dash between the 9 and the 1) pinned barrel 6". Wouldn't have bought that if I could have found a 624 or 24 6", but found it for $400 many years ago.only really shoot .44 Spl. In it but have an old box of Winchester 240 at about 1400fps from which I shoot 6 very couple of years to remind me why I don't use .44 Mag., hurts!

I have 3 Model 29's that I carry occasionally while hunting and shooting at the range. I prefer the ones with the endurance package and no lock.

Below in the first pic are a pair of 29-5's (6-inch & 4-inch). Second pic is a 6-inch 29-6.:) Don

Adios,

Bob, that Elmer Keith counts as 10 guns in my book! That's one pretty gun.

My Colt Anacondas (a few are .45 Colt rather than .44 Mag)...

You sir have some SICK Taste... Aside from my boy "75Vette"... you have the 2nd most badestesteseseseeseses collection of .44's I know of... Those semi's, that 8" Anaconda, down to that Bulldog... all scream aficionado for sure! Well done my man, well done...

Well…the 8" Anaconda I got in an auction NIB cheap enough to make it worthwhile. I really have little use for it…it's really nose heavy…a 6" version is much more balanced.

The Auto Mags reflect my occasional like of something different…not necessarily logical but just different. The Charter Arms is as new but no box. I got that for really short money in an auction. Just one of those deals when no one else wanted it.

Well I have a few, happy with all of them. I use them on my backpacking trips. I had a run-in with an angry big black bear, had my Model 65 357 Mag on hand. Felt very under gunned. Switch to my 629 and feel safer. Have a look...

with my Ruger 44 Mag deep in the bush.

Where do you Back Pack at? Looks awesome! And we too had a problem with an already re-relocated "Radio or GPS Collard" Pi$$Y Black Bear in Highlands NC... Constantly tearing up our gutters and trying to get into our garage, vehicles, jacking with our GSD's, etc...People don't think much of them but a nasty Blackie with an attitude problem and/or one that is just wired wrong IS a problem. And playin' dead with a BB doesn't work like it can with a Brownie either!

So I went from carrying an M625 with .45ACP'S to an M629 with 305gr hard cast .44Maggies from Underwood just after... "Something" very black and very large was paralleling us one twilight afternoon winding up a kayak fishing day; headed on the trail back to the cabin. The only time our GSD has ever shown fear... The smell of Hot-Garbage and Burnt-Hair lingered all around us.

I had my then M24 with Hot Specials I was carrying at the time drawn at low-ready expecting a full-on charge that whole trek home with Streamlight TLR HD's lit-up the whole multi-mile hike back home from the Mountain Lake.

We were so relieved to get back safe. It was after that day/evening that I too felt Undergunned and started full-time carrying the M629 "Mountain Back Packer" and 305gr Hard Cast Magnums and insisted keeping the Ruger M44 Carbine stoked with the same 4+1 capacity semi-auto loaded just behind the deck's double doors full-time. 12Gauge Ithaca M37's with 000-Buck and Slugs are kept in corners at the two other points of entry full-time as well. Because Strange "S#I^ goes on in these NC Mountains I tell you...

I have two 44 Magnums, a Ruger Alaskan and a S&W 629-6 Deluxe 3" bbl. In the backcountry I carry PPU 300gr. FPSP. I have never shot anything with this ammo and I hope it works if I need it.
