45 super

My search-Fu seems to be lacking, so perhaps you can help answer my question.
I've been shooting 45 Super's in my Colt 1911 for 23 years now so I'm familiar with the cartridge. I recently purchased a 625-3 & the 45 Super seems like it would be an ideal match for the N Frame.
My question is, have any of you used this round in the 625?

Yes, I have both of my 625-3s loaded with them. I can tell little difference in the blast and recoil from 230gr +Ps. They are supposed to provide 100 to 150 more fps.

My load for a 230g bullet is 12g of HS-6. It gets me right around 1200 FPS out of my 5" Colt.
Although I rarely load 185g bullets, I have had them reach 1500 FPS with 15g of HS-6. No pressure signs but my 1911 got really snappy! I found that 13-14g of HS-6 is a good working load for the 185g.
I'm going to assume that the big N frame should be able to handle these loads with no problems.

My 3" Power Custom Combat 625-3 has been rechambered for 460 Rolland. The 625 will take it. The idea of the Rolland was to get Super Performance or a little better while having a round that will not chamber in a 1911 not modified for it by accident. I need to work with mine some. I put the 460 Rolland ammo on the back burner several years ago. I need to start playing with it again.

Let me get this straight. The 45 Super is a .45ACP on steroids? And it can be fired without problems in a S&W 625? Or would this just shake the revolver into a early trip to S&W for a FTR? I just so happen to have a nice 625-2... which w/ 230 gr. ammo is very effective/accurate. Loaded w/ the .45 Super, it now sounds like it would also be useful for hunting medium game. Is this correct? Or am I misreading everything? Sincerely. brucev.

Your reading it correct. The 45 Super is basically a 45 "magnum" using a 45 ACP length case. You can't use regular 45 ACP cases though, as the walls are too thin. You can buy 45 Super cases or you can make them yourself. I did this for years with .451 Detonics magnum cases. When they dried up I used 45 Win. magnum cases. Now I just buy 45 Super cases from Starline.
I really love the round! Depending on your loading, you can get 357 magnum velocities with a much heavier 45 caliber bullet. How's that for power!
A very effective round to use on med. sized animals & should be even more so on the two legged kind.

Years ago, I emailed S&W and asked if I could shoot 45 SUPER in my 5" 625.

I expected a Lawyer answer, but was happy to get a YES reply.

My SIERRA load data book also has "revolver only" 45 ACP data.

I loaded up 230gr SPEER GOLD-DOTS to about 1150 fps and killed deer with great success.

Later, I traded that 625 off, and have regretted it since.

OK...I'll take this thread one step further. How about .45 Super in a Scandium framed .45 S&W revolver such as the 325 Night Guard? Any issues there other than increased recoil due to the lighter weight? I recently purchased some .45 Auto Rim .45 ACP +P from Buffalo Bore and the velocity doesn't vary by much at all from .45 Super. Just curious...

I have a 310 Night Guard. It will handle full house 10mm with no issues. The 329 Night Guard is a 44 Magnum. The 357 Night Guard is a 41 Magnum, The 325 Night Guard should handle 45 Super just fine. I would probably do my practicing with lighter loaded ammo. It will recoil much less, and be easier on the gun over time.

Hunting deer with a 45 Super. Doable, but I probably would use something with a little more power. I like large drain holes on both sides. You would need to pick your bullets and shots carefully.
I do handgun hunt, and I consider a 41 Magnum to be at the bottom of the power scale for deer hunting. My hunting handgun is a 480 Ruger Super RedHawk. Taged out with it this year with an 11 Point Buck, and a full size Doe on my Antlerless ONLY Tag. Both were 55 thru 60 yard shots using a 30mm UltraDot optical sight.

You have 3 case thicknesses that will load in a standard 45 acp.

Thin: 45 acp
Thicker: 45 acp+P
Thickest: 45 Super

The 45 Super, and the slightly longer 460 Rolland are made from the same thickness brass as a 45 Win Mag, just shorter.

It's all about heavier duty brass, for higher pressure loads.

While back gunsmith Jimmy Clark told me the 625 .45 Acp will easly take .45 Supers. After all, he said, they rechamber the guns to .460 Roland at his place!

Yes, in my 3 inch 625 I've shot many a .45 Super and .45 SMC.

Easy extraction and my chrono showed the 230 gr. .45 Supers flying at 1000 fps.

Resurrecting an older thread here. Would you mind sharing your favorite "super" loads? I am tempted to get into super in either the 1911 or Glock platform rather than pursue 357 Magnum. I like my ccw gun to always double as a potential "game getter" as I am a country boy out in the sticks. Do you use shock buffs or stronger springs etc... Thanks

The Sierra Revolver Only load dada and Hodgdon Reloading Manual 45 Super load data are suitable for 45 ACP revolvers. A New Model Blackhawk with 45 ACP cylinder is another good choice along with any N frame 45 ACP. The fixed sight Thunder Ranch model is a bit snappy with heavy loads and standard +p loads in full moon clips serves well for self defense. The adjustable sight 25-2 was my deer hunting gun until I tried a PC model 5 inch 625-7. Despite the shorter barrel, it is faster than the 6.5 inch 25-2. Longshot and Blue Dot are my powders of choice. 200 grain Speer Gold Dot with 10.6 grains Blue Dot gives 972 fps in 25-2. Max load of 12.4 grains Blue Dot gives 1190 fps in 5" S&W 625-7. 7 grains Unique up to 8.3 grains with Sierra 200 grain FPJ work well in revolvers. +P 45 ACP loads are safe in semiautomatic pistols but the slow burning powders affect slide velocity so a special dedicated pistol is the best choice so as not to beat up the gun. A good medium game load is 240 grain Sierra JHC with 14 grains 2400 for 1054 fps from S&W 25-2. 8.1 grains Long shot with 200 gr Speer JHP for 1053 fps, 20,100 cup is the Hodgdon 45 Super load, a +p 45 ACP load if Hodgdon listed such loads. I don't use Super brass but I do use new, once fired by me 45 ACP Starline brass for heavy loads.
