I have the Hogue rubber grips on my 4506 but I was thinking about switching to something else. I was curious what everyone preferred on their 4506s.

The curved backstrap is called palm swell by S&W and I prefer this grip . The 4506 and 1006 (10mm) use the same factory grips. These are also available for the 1076,1076 , 1086 in 10mm also.It seems the Houge rubber grips are the most popular, everyone likes/dislikes are different so go with the one that feels the best for you.

I believe that if you look at S&W PDF parts listing HERE, they only show the "Palm Swell" grip
for the 1026 and 1076; P/N 205000000 - (Optional) GRIP, PALM SWELL DL
The 1006, 1046 (not shown, but the same as 1086), 1066 and 1086 have two grips shown,
which are the same as the 45XX full size series:
P/N 203590000 - (Optional) GRIP, CURVED
P/N 203620000 - (Standard) GRIP, STRAIGHT
All listed for $18.82

I shoot factory straight grip. It works great for me. Besides, it just look "right" on the pistol. This 4506-1 had Hogue grips on it when I bought it. The factory straight grip is magical, you know. Before I put on the straight grip, the best group I could shoot was 5" and now look.

I like the factory curved. The aftermarket grips always seem to make them too chunky.

are the hogue grips also also curved? i just got a 4506 and was looking for hogue rubber grips with the finger grooves but i cant seem to find them. i may just and a hogue grip sleeve with finger grooves to the straight factory grips.

Here's a picture of my 4506's with Hogue rubber grips. They have a curve in the back.

On my 4566/63, the factory straight look the best, in my opinion, and I was dead certain that they felt and worked the best. An instructor watching me shoot told me the grip was too small for me, go get Hogues on it. I told him he was full of it, but bought them. It was amazing how much better I shot and controlled the gun with the UGLY Hogues. I later tried the curved back strap factory ones (loaned by a forum member here). Well, darn it, they looked better but I knew now that even with the extra bit of material, they didn't fit. Tried wooden Hogues...nope, too slick.
So my vote is with these looks ugly, shoots good Hogues.

Factory straight works best for me. I tried the Hogue exotic wood checkered. Looked cool but didn't work as well b/c it's curved at the bottom, forcing my hand up and giving me web bite. However, it worked great on my 4586 DAO!

did the rubber help control recoil better than the stock grips?
I don't know if it was what you'd call controlling recoil, but it made a huge difference in providing room for me to establish a proper thumbs forward type grip I was learning. More hand on the gun, especially the palm of the weak hand. It made for a longer trigger reach and helped me with trigger finger placement. I noticed immediately that I didn't have to re-grip the gun between shots. This is just my experience, though, I really think it all depends on your own hand size and grip style.

For shooting on my 4566, nothing beats the Hogue rubber grips for feel, but I put the curved backstrap ones on it because of printing.
