4506 Question

Recently aquired this 4506 and 65

I have shot them both twice already and I'm already very fond of both of them

The 4506 makes me want a 4566 already and I already got the smith revolver bug so this is not good.

My question is, is there a steel guide rod available for the 4506, if so where and is it recommended over what appears to be the standard aluminum one?

Hello....nice guns! The aluminum guide rod should and will give YEARS of use without any problem. My department issued 4506's to some of the guys in 1988; they were still carrying them in 2004 with only night sights replaced and heavier recoil springs due to the issued 185 +P Remingtons we carried. The magazines were occasionally replaced, too. But never a guide rod. Hope this helps. Joe in GA

Two great S&W Handguns.

I have a well used but taken care of 4506-1 that was a former North Dakota Highway Patrol gun. It was in sevice for a number of years and the guide rod it still working for it. You should have no troubles with yours as it looks brand new.

That is my favorite 4506 iteration. 4506-1 with Novaks and black controls.

Menck used to make a steel guide rod that had a internal spring to act as a shok buff.

I still have mine. dont know why, as a buddy bought my 4506 years ago.

Menck stop making them as they were not sellers. I used mine for training and put the aluminum rod back in for duty.

the rod was very well made.

He made me some shorter springs for my CQB, and I used the 4506 rod at a 1000 round school I went too. I collapsed the recoil spring, but it never missed beat.

He suggested I contact someone at Wolff to make a recoil spring that would work. I just never followed through.

We have purchased hundreds of police trade S&W autos in all calibers including 10mm. Never found A broke rod.
