 New guy here, still collecting data on my new to me 4506. Got out to the range and had a great time...the gun shoots better than me, but all of them do. Reading in WIKIPEDIA aout the 4506 and the narative says chambered for the powerful 45 ACP (and with the purchase of special springs, also shoots the 45 SUPER, making this model a favorite of law enforcement). Don't know how credible that is, so I thought I would solicit input from the experienced group.
Anybody have any experience modifying/beefing up this model for +P or 45 SUPER. If so, is this a DIY type project, or strictly a gunsmith job?
Thx-Steve

I'd never heard of .45 Super before reading this, but seems legit. It sounds like the equivalent of a +P+ load, which sounds interesting. I don't care for such loads usually but I believe a steel .45 should handle them nicely, with limited use. As for normal +P, the 4506 should eat them for breakfast. My 4516 (compact version of yours) likes Federal HST 230gr, but is a bit more accurate with normal pressure Winchester Ranger (not saying the HST are inaccurate). Hopefully someone else has some experience with Super. And Welcome!!

It's legit... swap out the slide recoil spring and firing pin spring with heavy duty Wolf springs, no need for anything fancy is my understanding.

The .45 super is the same case size as the .45 acp, but on steriods to handle the higher load.

Do a search in this pistol forum on "4506 45 super", you should find lots of info as the subject has been disected many times before.

Remember... the 4506 is built on the same frame/platform as the 1006 10mm screamer, it can handle the .45 Super.

I still have a Menck recoil spring system for the 4500 5".

It was a very good design and Menck stop making them because they were not selling. the only way he would make any money on these recoil spring systems was buy 100 parts each to make the assembly and they were not popular so he slowly diminished his stock to nothing.

I think I even got one for a 4566 somewhere. I tried to modify for my 4" CQB but it collapsed the recoil spring in an 800 round school. it needed further testing for the right length recoil spring.

replacement springs can be made by Wolff as that is where he got the springs for them.
