I have one of later models with the rail removed by the factory. The lock-up is as tight as any of the PC guns.

The pre-rail models have the chopped grip, which isn't for everyone. Make sure your hand fits before purchasing.

Here is mine with my 1076 and my previously owned 1006;

I don't carry it nearly enough, Smith j-frames have spoiled me in the CCW area.

That's what this one has, Kurt...made me wonder...

Try your 4556 without the magazine inserted. That is what it sort of feels like. I found that with the short grip, I really need that pinky extension on the mag to control the gun for quick follow-up shots. If you have small hands, you might have enough of a purchase on the grip. My paws are large, and I didn't like the chopped grip at all.

It's really a shame S&W porked the puppy with that grip. The gun features the early DAO trigger along with the PC style full length rails. It could have been the perfect DAO 45.

If one does happen to have shorter fingers, it IS the perfect DAO .45. I did not keep the 4553's with the rail that I bought a few years ago, but I have kept all of the pre-rail 4553's.

Cheers,

GrimJim
