Congrats on a fine carry piece. I have a 4516 and love it. I have always used 230gr Federal Hyrda-Shok JHP. Others may not agree with me due do the 457 having a lighter frame. Try a few types and see what you are comforatable with and above all what you shoot best with.

Guys,
Both ex guns. I just got a SW 45 Recon.
I am having hard time finding extra used
mags. Any ideas where to find them. I posted
here but nothing yet. Thought you might have
some in your area. Thank you.

The 457 will take any modern load, +P included. I use Speer 230gr Short Barrel loads in mine. They work very well.

My 457 is my primary carry gun, and is an excellent piece of American craftsmanship. The only change I made was to replace the plastic sights with XS 24/7 night sights.

American ammo makers all have a line of personal defense ammo, any of which should work well. We each have our favorite, but there is no one-size-fits-all.

Congrats on your 457... I just got myself one it is also used. The Serial Number is VMM08XX. can anyone give me an idea on how old it is? Thanks

8th SPS USAF - Try your local police supply. The 4516, 457 use the same mags as your Recon, and are very popular still, with law enforcement.

I've picked up 5 or 6 over the last year that way. If you can't find any anywhere let me know, and I'll find you a few. Regards 18DAI.

Mine choice has always been Federal 230 grain HydraShok, but I am sure that other premium rounds would be fine.

Other premium rounds would include any of the 230 grain standard pressure 45 ACP hollow points such as Golden Sabre, Winchester SXT, Speer Gold Dot, etc.

Yeah I have one of these too. I am very pleased with it so far. It is the Robbin to my Batman (4566)

I never could figure out why the 457 is largely ignored as a carry gun.

It has a lot going for it. Compact, accurate, cheap, tough finish and it's best feature, it will chamber and fire any 45 round you feed it.

I've had mine for a few years and have fired every type of bullet through it and it runs like a sewing machine, even with mixed rounds in the mag.

I've been looking at a lot of 457s for sale on the various pages and all are black ones. How common or rare is the silver one that Pioneer461 has? Great looking gun. Would like to get one but I am not seeing any like it.

18DAI,
Thank you. I have checked all local
shops, many forums and several wholesale
places. If you could fine me 2-3 used and let
me know asking price, I will get back asap and
get you out a MO. Cost of new is high. Used
is fine. Thanks again

8th SPS USAF - Email me your mailing address at the Email in my profile. I'll be over at the cop shop next week, and I'll get you a couple.

BTW, if you didn't know, the 8-round S&W 45XX mags will work in your Recon. They stick out a little, and you must be careful not to "slam" them home, but they do function perfectly well. I always carried a full size 45XX mag as a reload when carrying my 4516-3 or 457.

If I dont locate a couple for you locally, I'll just send you a couple of my spares. Since my gunsmith slicked up my 4563TSW, I have not carried my 4516-3 or 457, so I'm set. Talk to you soon! Regards 18DAI.

I put 150 rounds down range with my 457S this weekend without a hitch. It is a very pleasant pistol to shoot and very accurate in my hands.

Part of me is thinking of selling it, solely because of .45 ACP ammo cost. I've primarily gone to shooting 9mm at the range.
