5 guys

There is a 5 Guys a couple of miles from one of the venues that has a large gunshow I usually attend. My gunshow buddy and I head over there after a few hours of shopping and fighting the crowds with a good appetite built up and engorge ourselves on double bacon cheeseburgers. We usually split a bag of fries though as it is a large portion. I like their food much better than the somewhat legendary (outside of CA) In'N'Out Burger chain. But I sure wouldn't eat it more than once every few months. It's not exactly on Michelle Obama's recommended healthy lunch menu.

Five Guys is alright. I eat there now and then. Never knew they had shakes, though. Shakes are yummy, but very bad news in the calorie department.

Whataburger is pretty decent, but not in the same league as Five Guys. Red Robin and a local joint called White House Meat Market may just have the best restaurant burgers I've ever tried.

Then you guys are screwed, culinary-wise.

That is a shame, but NE Ohio is not known for good food, fine or fast. I spent most of the 90's living in Hudson, Ohio freezing my rear end off drinking beer and eating grease (Parasons, JoJos, Swenson's, Luigis, Louie's, Winking Lizard, Dantino's, Ken Stewarts, I hope the Bangkok Gourmet is still there - that was almost like culture. .

Chester's is OK, but it's a bit of a drive to the closest one. They are not found on every street corner like McD, Burger King, JIB, etc. When I worked at Randolph AFB, there was one in Universal City which I visited occasionally. I think it's still a local chain.

A new hamburger chain has started here - Frontier. I went once when they first opened, doubt I will return as it's nothing special. I doubt they will make it in the long haul.

Frontier is the old Jim's before they became sit-down restaurants. They started in the 1940's. I like their burgers OK. Chester's makes very good burgers. It is hard to beat Chris Madrid's if you are near downtown San Antonio.

I can't recommend 5 Guys burgers either. When the best thing someone can say about a burger place is "they have great fries," you got a problem.

I would go to 5 Guys when I lived in Fairfax County VA - which I believe is the home of the chain. My wife thought it was cool - but I would make a 45 minute drive to the closest Fuddruckers.

I guess you folks are right about them being overpriced. One time I took my wife her- HAS- TO-BE- ADOPTED brother, his wife and I to 5 guys and my BIL ordered a plain burger with nothing on it. For what that burger cost he didn't even put catsup on it. WHAT a Waste ! But then I`m going on about BIL`s and about to whats the word steer my own thread off course?
But I really do like the fries, but yesterdays hemorrhoid business kind of ruined my appetite.
Maybe we should start talking about BIL`s and Hemorrhoids.
Take my BIL----please!!!

But I really do like the fries,

I don't remember the fries being particularly good. What I remember is a pretty pedestrian, run of the mill lunch for 2 was over $30. No shakes or anything, just 2 burgers, drinks and fries.

I could have made the same thing at home and had money left over for a pound of gun powder.

Where in the world is this? In Charles Town, Wv, that would be
about $20!

Well sure you can typically eat better for less at home than out. The tricky part of that equation is that the wife and I don't live our lives hunkered down at home 24/7.

We typically eat out.... when we're already out. The notion that we're necessarily going to drive back home from wherever we're at to save a buck on lunch isn't the path to economic prosperity nor a happy wife. ;)

There was a chain called Braum's which operated in Texas and Oklahoma (and possibly elsewhere) which had great burgers and fries, even though they were mainly ice cream oriented. But I remember their service was very slow. I don't know whether they are still around, as I haven't seen one in many years. Red Robin is OK for burgers, but we don't like their fries - too large and undercooked soggy.

I'll agree the small local HB joints are often the best. Near San Antonio, in Bracken, there was a small restaurant, the Bracken Cafe, located on a railroad track. The train crews always ate there, and they had the best burgers. Long gone now. There was also a small place in far Western Maryland (Westernport) and we would drive 20 miles to eat their burgers.

Had to think about it and look at a map-
I did take my Grandkids to one once.
Recall it was fairly pricey and fairly mediocre.
In the 505, if you want a good burger cooked when you order it, green chili if you want it,
You go to our local chain- Blake's.

by the way, if you crave something special that only comes from one chain, check the net for knock off recipes.
you can pretty much duplicate anything.

I can make milkshakes as good or better than 5 Guys, however, that requires having all the ingredients in my house.

A few years ago, I changed the way I eat and I lost 60 pounds. Milk, ice cream, and chocolate syrup were a daily thing for me. I don't keep stuff like that in my house anymore. Now, 5 Guys is not a regular part of my diet, just an occasional treat. Thankfully, the nearest one is 70 miles away.

And 5 guys is not my favorite chain, either. That would be Dick's Drive In, in Seattle.

lemme give a plug to knock off recipes in general.
i had a craving for the old hostess devils food cupcakes, with the cream in the middle.
i couldn't find them but some nice person posted a knock off.
totally yum.
as far as great burgers, i get a chuck roast n a sirloin roast ground together. perfect.

No doubt HBs and fries made at home can be as good as or better than those from any restaurant or chain. For reasons unknown, my wife will not prepare hamburgers and fries at home, but she will gladly eat them if we go out. I quit arguing about it long ago.

deep frying is a different skill from general cooking.
you gotta learn it if you want fries n donuts.
