New to reloading. Looking for a powder that will work with both .500 mag. and .45/70 Govt. 300 to 405 Gr. projectiles.

That is a tall order....

Getting performance out of one power will be challenging. Experience says that it will be a very fast rifle powder or a very slow magnum handgun powder. I don't have data that shows a powder for both, but from experience I can recommend that you look into a couple of powders that have potential. Two that I have used that can be used between pistol and rifle are IMR or Hodgdon 4198 and Alliant's Unique.

One that I haven't used is a very slow magnum pistol powder, IMR or Hodgon's 4350. You can look at a powder burn rate chart to see other powders of this type.

Again, just because you can get a powder to work in both, I seriously doubt you will get max performance from both. It would be much better to use one powder for each.

Lot of case capacity difference between them

But is he looking for max power loads or just range fodder loads?

He hasn't explained that, only gave minimal details.

I tried 4198 in my 460/3.5" barreled Smith.
Would have to check the load data/bullet weights, but they hit the target at 25yds.
Have a variety of other powders now for the 460/8" barreled
and the 3.5".

Have been using 4198 for decades in the 458 WinMag and 223/5.56/1:12 twist rifles, with 55gr bullets.
21gr of powder, not barrel burners, and with 300gr JSN Sierras, with 50gr-70gr+ in the Blaster, for teaching new shooters.
Mag primers with 50gr and 55gr, (no filler necessary),
then at 60gr or more, regular primers.

IIRC 4198 can be used in the 45-70.
OP should add more info, start checking the bullet/powder makers websites, and then double check here.

45-70 Govt

Please reference reloading books
and internet before reloading.

I have no experience with the
500S&W revolver cartridge. But…

My go to 45-70Govt. is 300gr Lead
bullet (Oregon Trail) / a bag of Starline
Brass / CCI Large Rifle Primer / IMR4198
35.8grs (1700fps?) / Medium roll crimp bullet.

In the Marlin lever action rifles I shot it in
was lever action accurate and nice shooting.
Very devastating 100yd round.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

I have used Accurate XMP5744 in both .500 S&W and .45-70. It's quite satisfactory for middle of the road loads in both cartridges, which would still kill pretty much anything on this continent. I use it with cast bullets.

IMR 4198 is the best thing going for .45-70 but I have never tried it in .500 S&W. I always liked Trail Boss in the .500 S&W; the loads produced very little recoil and were very accurate. I had a kid who had never fired a handgun knocking down bowling pins on his first range session. But Trail Boss is gone forever, so that's that. If you happen to have a stash it would probably work well in .45-70 too.

The latest Hornady Loading Manuel has data for 45-70 Contender loads and 500 S&W revolver loads with a few common use powders. I believe the Contender loads are safe in Modern Winchester 1886 & 1885 High wall actions and Marlin 1895 rifles.

Having a single powder for loading two cartridges is nice from a logistics point of view. But best performance would suggest two different cans of powder. At the cost of the guns, brass, and dies, you shouldn't have any problem affording two cans of powder.
