The topic occasionally comes up about the 586/686 no-dash and dash-1 factory firing pin bushing repair and specifically how to identify if it's been done. I was taking some photos of my 586 no-dash yesterday, so I thought I would take a photo of my frame to show what the repair stamping looks like.

When the repair has been done, there is an "M" stamped on the frame right by the serial number and model number, as you'll see in the photo below. This repair was only suggested on the no-dash and dash-1 guns, as the dash-2 guns had the change made already. My understanding is that S&W will still perform this recall work free of charge.

Whoever did the work on my gun back in the day at the factory also gave it a sweet little action job, because it's got a great DA trigger pull.

I found out that if you send in an unmodified 586/686 for something else they will do the modification and add the "M" stamp. I sent my 686-1 in for the combat action package they used to do. When I got it back it had the "M" stamp.

I expect that any 586/686 or 586-1/686-1 sent back for any reason would have had the firing pin bushing replaced and the "M" stamp added in the yoke recess.

Just this January I sent my 686 dash-1 to S&W for the factory firing pin bushing warranty repair and a check-up. From the day I turned it over to Fed-Ex, until it was returned to my door was five (5) weeks to the day. Excellent business-like service from S&W.
