Hi guys,
I've got kind of a strange question. Would it be possible to install a 686 barrel and 686 6-shot cylinder on a 586 frame?
If so, what are the potential downsides (if any)..i.e. would this be a "drop in" simple swap of parts, or would there be gunsmith-involved fitting/timing issues?
Also, is it possible to get an unfluted cylinder for the 686?
Thanks!

That is a strange question. I was wondering why someone would want to do that in the first place. I'm no expert, but I know that changing a barrel, and or a cylinder would really require a gunsmith, and one who knows S&W revolver well. It's not exactly like putting a different barrel in a Glock. I think you are talking about quite a bit of money to do the operation, as well.

With a new cylinder and barrel and enough money to pay a revolver smith, sure it's possible. Shouldn't cost much more than a good used 686.
If you mean can you grab up any used barrel and cylinder and drop them in, it's like buying a lottery ticket. Maybe work easy, maybe work hard, maybe not work at all.

After thinking harder about this last night I came to the same conclusion. I was originally thinking two things: one, I like the two-tone look of the stainless cylinder on the Hunter models, and two, I see 686 SS barrels come up on gunbroker fairly often and was considering buying one to have more front sight options than my 586 currently has.
After reflecting on this, I've decided to just stick with what I've got and quit daydreaming so much.
Thank you for your response, W4. You hit the nail on the head.
