586 Info request

A friend bought a Nickel model 586 in AZ yesterday and is asking me for information.

What can you tell me about this gun? Ser #AAL7xxx

AAL....looks like 82 or 83.

Blue steel version of the 686.....personally never much cared for nickel ..... IMHO just go straight to stainless.

I like 586s just as nice as a Python to look at in my opinion........ better Smith trigger/ action IMO

....I wasn't sure how many people thought like me on these two points. The trigger on my 686 is excellent and I never thought the Pythons looked that great since I first saw a picture of one in the 60's. I felt like it was intentionally designed to look bad *** and that just didn't appeal to me.

Not a fan of the Colt grip either.... feels like a plow handle.......but have to agree the Colt's vented barrel is more 'bad---" than the 586/686.

Love to have a 4" 586 Smolt.......

I bought a 6" Nickle 586. I really like it. I agree that the 586 is similar to a Python. I think the SA trigger on a Smith is the best out there. 586's I own can't compete with the Royal Blue of the Colt, but I think the functionality is similar.

The Smiths are much sturdier and it is apparent that the Smith built like a tank compared to the Python.

Each have their place and I love them. I really like the vented rib on the Colt pistol. An expensive, but cool look.

Any one know how many Nickle 586's were produced ? I haven't seen a lot of them over the years.

There is a nickel 6" 586 on one of the auction sites.. BIN over a $1000.00

I have a 586-8 in the blue iteration. Works just fine. If that purchase is factory then it should be fine too. Crappy nickel job is awful! Chips off like Ford paint.

Even if it takes some time and effort, you gotta post some pics of this gun. A nickle M586 from that era is very unusual. It would be a real treat.

I asked about the box and docs.. He said he didn't get them but would ask about them.

I wondered about how uncommon a nickel one would be.

I'll work on pictures.

They’re not uncommon, but not common either, if that makes any sense. But what a great revolver! I admit I was skeptical about them when they came along but they’ve sure made a believer of me. I’d much rather shoot .357s in a 586 than in a Model 19. And I’ve never seen one that wasn’t a super-shooter, too. They seem to be very accurate guns. I’ve seen more nickel 6-inch guns than 4-inchers, for some reason.
