I just purchased a 586-L Comp and have a question about its coating. First of all I like it but I would have preferred a traditional blueing finish. It's called a blued matt black finish on the Smith & Wesson web site. I'm in the coatings business and I would call it more of a "satin" finish than a "Matt" finish. It definetly is black and it definetly is a coating. My best guess is it's a powder coating that is heat set. That would make it very solvent resistant. Does any one know anything about this coating? Thanks

I have an older 586 L Comp. It came with a traditional Blued Finish. It is my understanding that the new Matte Black finish does not hold up well.

I changed the grips and front sight on mine. It came just like the new ones. Had some serious action work done as well.

Funny irony! The picture you just reposted is the reason I purchased that revolver. No I'm not blaming you. :)Yes, I've read that a leather holster (leather is abrasive though) will start to wear the finish rather quickly. Guess this one will be relagated to the night stand instead of being a main CC. Exspensive revolver to be concealed in a night stand!!! Thanks for responding.

Has anybody found a good carry holster for the 586 L-Comp? I'm considering a garret silent thunder but want to see if there are other kydex options out there.

Mine is from the first run of 200 L-comps back in 2000

Remember that website description that you are reading is 15 years old.

In large companies Production people seldom tell the Marketing people to update the website if/when minor changes occur

Lobo Gun Leather makes nice holsters and the owner is a member here. I use this "Enhanced Pancake" holster for OWB carry, from time to time.

Like Colt_saa, the finish on my older L-Comp is holding up nicely.

The Performance Center has put out some coated guns in the past. Green M629's. Various blackened stainless guns. Birdsong is one proprietary brand of coatings that has been mentioned by name. Alloy frame guns have always been coated or anodized.

If you order a Lobo holster make sure you include the SMOOTH LINING. It is soft as a babies behind. Minimizes wear and the gun slides in and out like butter. Adds a bit to the cost but well worth it. I added it on all of mine.
