I have a 586 no dash no M (1982 vintage)
recently while shooting 125gr 357's the cylinder locked up, I was able to open it safely. I am not the original owner and probably have a combined 500-600 rounds of 38 special or 158 gr 357's thru it. This is the first time I have encountered this and it was with the 125gr. The gun is in overall excellent condition otherwise.

Now my question, I know their is a Modification for the 586 and that Smith will do it reportedly for free.

Is there anything else that I should have them check or are their any other modifications that might be worth while if it is already in their shop.
I am willing to pay for tuning/etc if that is in my best interest while it is their.

Also, any contact info appreciated.

And, someone told me it has to ship back to them using an FFL - is this true

Thanks in advance for any help

If you get the right customer service rep, they'll send you a shipping label you use via FedEx (I believe), no FFL required. You can contact them via email or phone found at the S&W website. The "M" fix will include a new firing pin and bushing. You'd have to ask the company for a quote on any other tuning or repairs you want.

I'm curious, exactly what ammo caused your lockup? Was it factory, if so, which brand? Reloads?

If you have a friendly FFL it is about half the cost to ship the revolver to S&W using them verses you sending it overnight. They can ship it US priority mail verses you shipping it over night as required by law for a non FFL holder.

As far as other services I haven't had them do any work but if you want anything done this would be the time to do it.

Orthers will hopefully post as I've seen posts up here where other sending it back for the same warranty work had action tuning jobs and they were very happy.

I was trying out Hornady Personal Defense 125 gr
357's
Just glad it didn't happen when a couple of bg's were breaking in the house - i would have had to club them with the wooden stocks

My 686 no dash/no M is back at the factory as we speak. I had to call, and the rep was very hesitant to give me a label. He asked if I had experienced the problem, and I told him no. I had to be rather assertive and remind him it was a factory recall before he finally agreed (!) to send a label. Because yours has locked up on you, I wouldn't imagine you will have any problem.

Actually, he did give me a hard time
He told me since it hadn't happened before that it was not the recall issue
I said b.s
he said there was dirt under the extractor rod or star and that is why it locked up
I cleaned it well last weekend and gonna put some rounds thru it at the range this weekend
Any issues and their getting another phone call
I did get the rep's name - I will be sure not to talk to him again
I reminded him that there was a factory notice on this and it would have been a hell of a thing if it locked up if I really needed it - he seemed indifferent
