I'm looking at picking up my first revolver and was leaning towards a 686, but my friend offered me his 586 w/ 6" barrel for $575 with a few boxes of ammo.

This is essentially the same as a 686 except it's blued vs. stainless, correct? Is there anything I should look for or be aware of problem-wise? It seems to be in very good shape. Thanks for the help!

Correct, the 586 and 686 are/were pretty much the same except for steel type.

The 580/680 series guns generally have no problems. The earlier ones (less than -2) had a recall due to primer flowback into the hammer nose bushing (the little circular piece on the recoil shield). It is a free warranty fix and the gun would be stamped M on the frame under the barrel near MOD 586 if it was done. If your friend has never had a problem the mod probably isn't needed.

With the current ammo shortage, "a few boxes" may be worth as much as the gun :). Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the input. He said it was manufactured in 88 and it does have and M stamped on it. Hopefully I'll be able to pick it up (with the wifey's approval) :)
