I have been looking around the web without any conclusion.

The 5" 5906 PPCs that I have seen all have straight slide serrations.

The 6" 5906 PPCs that I have seen all have scalloped slide serrations.

Now all the 5" guns had serial numbers lower that the lowest 6" guns that I have seen.

So here is the question . . . . Have these always been different on the two slide lengths? Or is there some point where the straight serrations changed to scalloped on both lengths?

There were a few 6" PPC 9s made with the shortened dustcover, however you describe it like the first 5"PPC 9s. I dont believe those had the fishscale type of cuts. I do not believe any of the 5" PPC guns had it.
I think the first gun I saw with the scallops was a 945, and then it came out on the heavy slide type 6" ppc 9s when they were made. The first 6" guns were handed out by S/W to the top shooters Pride, Cobb, Hemphill, probably Tippet also dont know any others . So I dont have any idea how many were made. I know a few years later Pride and Cobb had gotten rid of theirs for the heavy slide version, or 1911s. Some other shooters were shooting them and then I lost track of the 2, I saw around. I think they would have to be pretty rare to find.

“CALREB”, now I can see what you were saying about ambi’s being installed on them. (Either requested from the PC originally or changed out after.)

I mean I can see it BIG TIME. :D

I’m keeping the ambi that came with mine but happy now with the single side/over size one I found for it.

Oh, 5”, shortened dust cover, straight serrations not scalloped. Late 1998.

There was an EXTREMELY interesting variation that ended last Sunday on Gunbroker, it had European proof marks and was marked on the right side of the 6-inch long slide as “9mm Target Champion” which we know has been the model name used for the European market for PPC-9 pistols.

Interestingly enough, unlike most of the European marketed PC semiauto pistols, it did not have a WIS serial prefix (for WISCHO), it had a BEM-serial prefix.

This is the first long slide PPC-9 or Target Champion I’ve ever seen with the 5-inch style PC slide contour, and it also had the fish scale rear serrations.

Final bid was $5,100. This pistol is a stunner.

This is the only 6-inch long slide PPC-9/Target Champion that I’ve ever seen with the 5-inch slide profile and finish work.
