I have a 5906 that I bought used and it has never shot groups, more like a shotgun at long distance. I can't see anything wrong with the barrel but I'm not an expert at such things. Have tried different reloads and store bought ammo and nothing works. With my other pistols I can shot pretty good groups so it leads me to think there is something wrong with the 5906. There is no pistol smiths around where I live so hoping to fix myself, have worked on long guns and 1911's so am not a novice. Any suggestions on what to look for or do. I really like the pistol so would like to fix the problem.

There can be human and mechanical factors involved. What size groups are you getting at long (and short) distances? Benchrest groups? Has anyone else shot it, and with what results?

Then, does it have a really bad trigger? Slide/barrel lockup and tightness seem ok?

If you are unsure of the age of the recoil spring, a new spring may take care of your issue.

Yes I had a couple of people shoot it with same results. I am not getting groups, unless you call 12" at 15 yards groups. Slide and barrel lockup seem tight. I understand the human factor and have shot a couple hundred rounds thru it. I shoot 1911's a lot and also a 4506 a lot and shoot them pretty good. I am thinking about putting a new barrel in it to see if that helps but maybe its best to put it back in the safe and forget about it. I will not trade or sell something that shoots this bad.

I put a new recoil spring in it when I got it. I do that for all the used auto's I get.

Difficult to diagnose without shooting it. If its not consistent off target, (as in sight alignment), but just shoots willy nilly possibly the barrel is the cause. Check the crown of the barrel for dents. Cheaper to have it re-crowned than a new barrel. My 5906 is the most accurate of all my guns.

there has to be something wrong with the last 1/2 inch of the barrel when you get down to it that is really all that matters. I suspect its out of round.

Thanks for the reply's. I called S&W and they said they don't repair them any more, that they are obsolete. He said they sold all their parts and to try Gun Parts Corp for a barrel. I hate to stick a lot of money into it but it sure is no good the way it is.

What type of ammo have you used thus far? Reloads or factory?
Lead or jacketed?

Can you post a picture with a view through the backlit barrel?
Are the lands distinct?

Lie. Some PD's still use them. NYPD being a big customer with the 5946.

IF they don't support them anymore, they should start replacing them with M&P's. Ruger does that with the Six series revolvers.

Keep an eye out for a barrel on gunbroker, gunsamerica, and eBay. All 3 of those are great sources for S&W semi auto parts. None currently on any of those sites, but you have to check all the time.

I ordered a new barrel will let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the reply's

My 4506-1 is the same i can hit paper at 25 but no where as good of groups as my canik 55 s120. I was a range coach in the Marines and did a few ranges for practice with the M9 and would been expert if I had gone to the range for score. The bore almost looks like a shotgun bore. Have a barrel on backorder from midway for 79. Mine doesn't have an LEO markings, but I did change the recoil spring and it did help with the brass flying out as well as get more shots on paper at 25.

I was waiting for some one to call me out on the out of round because here you go ---out of round , ignore the glare it also a 12 inch shooter. perhaps yours may be such or just slightly larger caliber you dont need fancy calipers place bullet into the barrel on mine the bullet makes contact 12 and 6 and air on 3 and 9
