I have a Model 625-4, it has what I believe is one of the earliest "new" style rear sights.
What is different from any of my other guns is both the location of the screw in front that holds it in place and also the size of the screw itself, it has a small head, much like the "old style" yet the front of sight has a rounded tang.
Anyone familiar with this and have any ideas where to get a new rear sight like this? I have checked a lot of places and of course S& W
The old ones are discontinued, but I have extras and people still have NOS and used, and the "normal " new style, they are readily available. This variant does not seem easy to find.
S&W is no help, they sent me the wrong one and then took it back but young women I spoke to said that's all they have. She said what do I expect for such an old gun? I wanted to say that in my World it's a new gun as it's from the early 1990's!!
I like to be able to change heights, that why I want a second, plus for damage control, if I drop it.
I am going to place a "want to buy" post too.

I have never heard of another sight between the older square front, and the newer round front rear sights. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise though.

If this gun does in fact have a 3rd unknown sight, you probably don't have a lot of recourse other than doing a wtb post, or surfing used part places.

What might be helpful is if you knew the date of birth for your gun. It would give you a place to start looking for sights from other guns. I believe that the more modern rounded front sight was universal to K and N frame guns at least

Hello Chris,
the first N-Frame Revolvers (Example: M 629-3 Classic DX) that came "factory drilled & tapped by S&W" for
an easy mount of an optical device used a SPECIAL* Rear Sight Leaf.
Here you can find some more info about that (scroll down to "NOW HEAR THIS"):
+ Bowen Classic Arms + Parts Store

*Round front + small screw, "all in all" a bit longer Rear Sight Leaf as the later** (for the stainless .44Magnum
= since the M 629-4) ones

**Round front + BIG screw (using the front hole for the mount), some examples here
629-4 $850 6" drilled threw top strap

Well, I'll be darned!! Learn something new here every day!! I never noticed anything but the large screw on the rounded sights. This thread sent me to the safe only to find two 629-3s with the small sight screw.

The 6 1/2 inch DX I bought in 1992, and the 5 inch a few years later.
