Gentlemen, am seeking advice or direction on this 629-1 that I bought a couple of years ago at LGS. It is a magna ported 4", and while I knew at the time I bought it that it seemed a bit "loose", I purchased it anyway for $500 OTD. Their gunsmith pronounced it safe to fire at the time of the sale, and I had another gunsmith examine it a few months later, he also pronounced it well used , but safe.
In my mind , I would like to send it to Smith& Wesson or Cylinder and Slide etc for "Factory Rebuild" or to be brought to factory specs.
The crane seems to not lock into the frame very tight with a .020 gap when pushing the cylinder right to left, and the end play , movement of the cylinder fore and aft seems slight, but there is movement.
When I send it in for repair/ rebuild , what services should I ask for, and what should I expect when it comes back to me ?
Should I expect a nice tight lock up , like on my slightly used model 66 ?
Thank You for any and all help and advice.

I have seen varying gaps between the yoke and the frame on a lot of factory guns. That is just variations in the manufacturing process. It looks bad, but doesn't hurt anything as long as the cylinder locks up right.

The fore and aft movement is called "endshake". A little bit isn't too bad since you have a little extra cylinder gap. I like it to be about .001 or so.

The gun should be OK to shoot, but would benefit from some TLC by a smith who knows revolvers. If they have extra parts, they might be able to find a yoke that fits your frame better, fix the endshake and set the barrel back for a .005 to .006 cylinder gap.
