Hey all, I'm looking to purchase a 629-2 4" (pre-mountain gun/mountain gun) and am a little concerned with a burr and gouge on the crane. Seller is reputable and gun is in otherwise good condition. I really want to buy it, and suppose I could send off to get repaired if this was to become an issue, but figured it would be a good idea to ask the experts (I covered serial number as I have not yet purchased). Additionally, I'm thinking this is a 1988 629-2? Thanks in advance!

Nothing to worry about. Just tool marks. Does it open and close smoothly? Wouldn’t stop me from grabbing it.

If it has a 4" tapered barrel and the front of the cylinder is chamfered, you're looking at a 629 Mountain Revolver. IIRC, about 5000 were made. They were supplied from the factory with K frame Pachmayr Grippers. Round butt N frame stocks weren't available at the time, and K frame Grippers has enough "give" to work.
Those marks wouldn't bother me at all. I had these Combat stocks on mine, before switching to Herrett's.

Good deal, tapered barrel, chamfered cylinder, and bead blast finish. Should be a great addition. It's been ported somewhere along the journey, would prefer it wasn't for authenticity, but will still work well for my needs.
I will be looking for stocks like Herrett's or similar soon.

Here’s a 629-2 mountain revolver. Someone rebored and chambered for 45 colt and cut for moon clips so it’ll shoot 45acp also. Point of impact for the ACPs is quite a bit higher than 45 colt.
It’s a crime to redo a fairly uncommon gun but someone did it before me and allowed me to get a 45 mountain revolver for a great price. For the finish I don’t know if it was coated or bead blasted. I think it was bead blasted. It’s a good shooter though.

Have you checked it for end shake? Checked for horizontal (left to right) movement of the crane when closed?

Resurrecting this conversation. The deal for the 629-2 unfortunately fell apart. I’ve since acquired a 629-6 that should suit my needs well (although not as cool as the mountain gun). Any ideas when serial number prefix DAP would have been produced? I gather sometime between 2001-2007.

I just won one of these original Mountain Revolvers in an online auction by a local auction house. It's not mint but in good condition and has a set of Craig Spegels installed. The deal that I got might be considered illegal, but no complaints here. Next week after the waiting period I'll have to start my own thread with some pics.

No idea of the DAP prefix as my old SCSW 3 only goes up to around 2003 and the only alpha I see with D is DEW (329-1) 2003.
Too bad you missed out on the 629-2,
I have that guns twin with same Magnaporting,
I seem to recall something about SW sending some off to Magnaport and those having a sticker on the box.
I might be wrong.
